Why can I open Keepass *.kdbx files only with Google Drive-PDF-Viewer?? It is no PDF. Why does the dropbox app does not let me choose a different App to open the file with? Why not use the android default app open selection??
Having the same issue with version 200.2 Keepass files open as PDF.
The workaround by toggeling offline works. There is an option to select how to open the file.
@Jay,
You explanation here seems incorrect:
"If the Keepassdroid app isn't showing as an option when opening via Dropbox, then it means that the developer would need to look into this, since the Android device doesn't have the extension registered to that app"
https://www.dropboxforum.com/t5/Dropbox-files-folders/Android-Kdbx-files-can-only-opened-with-Google-Drive-PDF-Viewer/m-p/427607/highlight/true#M163540
If this were true then the workaround using offline mode should not have worked. There shouldn't have been an option to choose to open KDB/KDBX files with Keepass regardless if we are in offline mode or online mode.
Please talk to DropBox developers to fix this.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
This has resolved my issue of not being able to open Keepass from within Dropbox.
It has driven me crazy, Dropbox would only display the Drive PDF Viewer open to Open With, and wouldn't allow me to change it to anythinge else.
Works for me on a plain Moto G5S...
So, this is a good warning to all of us who have found our way to this thread to store these notes in a place where you can review them if the need to remove and replace Dropbox and/or keepassdroid arises, and keepass is no longer the default app.
Hello,
I have the same issue, which has been bugging me for a long time. I have tried all of the ideas mentioned here. Some work, but only temporarily. I have tried checking file associations, clearing data, uninstalling/reinstalling the app. Still the issue continues to occur.
I have a Moto G7, Android version 10, and I use the Dropbox app, version 202.2.2, and KeePassDroid app, version 2.5.12.
I have a fix for this which has helped _me_ on _my_ device. It might work for you, it might not. It might be temporary, it might be permanent. You may need to apply the fix again periodically. YMMV.
1.) Export the .kdbx file from Dropbox to your device.
2.) Launch FX file explorer app. (If you do not use FX, you can try other file explorers if you want. However, the one with which I tested this fix is FX. I can't vouch for any others.)
3.) Navigate to your exported .kdbx file. (Mine was exported to my Download folder. This might be different for you and your device.)
4.) Tap the .kdbx file, wait for the "Open As" dialog to appear, then tap the "OPEN AS" link at the bottom right of that dialog.
5.) Tap the entry labeled "*/* (application/* )".
6.) The "OPEN WITH" dialog should then appear. Under the "OPEN WITH APPLICATION" section, find and tap "KeePassDroid".
7.) The KeePassDroid app should then open your .kdbx file. At this point you can close FX and KeePassDroid. Or, keep them open if you want. Not sure if it makes a difference. Either way, continue to the last step.
8.) Go back to Dropbox and try opening the .kdbx file directly from Dropbox. It should now open directly in KeePassDroid.
Hope this helps.

keepassdroid is still the default app in android for kdbx files. I switched now to nextcloud and it works well.
Hey everyone, thanks for checking in with us and sorry to hear that you're still having trouble with this.
In order to have a better look into this matter with you, could you please submit a ticket to our team here, and let us know the ID (eg. #1234567) associated with it?
If you can't create a ticket, just let us know and we'd be more than happy to send you one.
Keep us posted!
Did you mean to link to a ticket-creation page?
That's right, @DrRob.
To help out a bit more though, I've sent you a ticket, so when you get the chance, check your inbox for my latest message and we'll take it from there.
I look forward to hearing back from you!
Hi Lusil,
I can't open the ticket you've sent me a link to, even though I'm logged in to Dropbox. When I try to open the ticket URL, the website redirects to https://www.dropbox.com/support/
I also can't reply to the message to confirm my email address because the address I use with Dropbox is a receive-only address.
Rob.
For security purposes, we're only able to send the ticket to the email address associated with your Dropbox Community profile.
If you'd like, you can change the email address you've connected to one that you can receive and reply from.
However, I can see that you've replied to my ticket already, so we can continue having a look into this from there.
Keep an eye out for my message there, thanks @DrRob!
Curiously, Dropbox has recently started offering me some kind of paid service that includes its own password management system. You guys didn't actually break KeePassDroid on purpose, did you?Hmm... dismayed.
More than a year ago Dropbox updates broke the ability to open up keepass files. You guys fixed it that time.
Today, the same issue has occured. On both of our S7's, I tried deleting both apps and re-installing. No joy.
We are going to NEED to switch to another online data storage program if this isn't fixed really soon, as access to our respective keepass password file managers is what we need most, and we need it often.
Hi @phoenixbound; thanks for posting on our Community!
As your query seems to echo the discussion under this thread, I just merged your post here.
Can you please let me know the version of our mobile app on your devices and if you're able to export those files to the mentioned 3rd party app?
While we're at it, would it be OK with you if we used the email address for your Community's profile to reach out so we can further investigate?
Let us know here when you get the chance, and we'll take it from there.
Thanks!
@phoenixbound
I tried Google Drive that works as expected with keepass files. But then switched completely to nextcloud since dropbox now wants money for using on more than 2 devices. It was a great service. But now it is trash. Keeping my account only for being able to share with friends still stuck on dropbox
Tested Keepass2Android and am getting the same behavior as with KeePassDroid
Dropbox has a password manager. I believe in August.
I am starting to suspect that they are intentionally avoiding fixing this bug.
Thanks for all your updates here!
We'd like to have a look further into this with you. So if you haven't already, please submit a ticket with our Support team from here.
You'll get a ticket number (eg. #1234567) that you can let me know here and I can pass along the info you've provided here.
If you have any troubles with this, let me know and I'd be happy to help out with this.
Keep me posted!
This is still a problem as of November 1st, 2020. I haven't been able to figure out how to reproduce the issue consistently, but have confirmed the offline toggle workaround. The Dropbox app will sometimes just switch back to opening kdbx files with pdf apps after extended periods of working correctly, or nearly immediately after applying the offline toggle workaround.
I have currently figured out one more workaround, for Androids, that I think I will be able to stick to. Using the Keepass2Android Password Safe app developed by Philipp Crocoll (Croco Apps), I set the app to open with the Dropbox app and pointed it to the file. This app allows you to access the kdbx file specifically and will remember it, as well as sync the changes when you save. It also notified me the copy of the kdbx I was working on changed when I created a new save on my computer, as well as letting me resync and open the new file without me needing to enter the password again.
Make sure you are using "Keepass2Android Password Safe" and not "Keepass2Andorid Offline"
After being annoyed with this for months, I just noticed someone else here mention Google Drive. Given I'm completely part of the Google ecosystem, I can't beleive I didn't think of this sooner. Installed Google Fire Drive Stream, so I have a nice, easy to access Google Drive folder accessible via Windows Explorer for when I'm working, and then when using my android devices, I just open click on the KDBX file in the Drive app and it opens KeePassDroid just like Dropbox used to do.
My next action after typing this will be to uninstall Dropbox from my devices, and computer.
Thanks fo rthe many useful years Dropbox, but given this was literally the only thing I used you for, and you no longer support it, it's adios.
I agree, I recommend switching away from Dropbox to free competitors like Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, Apple ICloud etc. for this.It seems quite likely that Dropbox broke this on purpose, because along with the inability to remember which app to open the file with, it advertises its own password storage mechanism, hopefully without backdoor. To recap:- the below is for Android- file extension is .kdbx* - after turning on "Make available offline" for the .kdbx file, waiting for it to be downloaded and trying the open the file, Dropbox shows a prompt for which app to use that includes KeepPassDroid, along with buttons "Always" and "Just Once". - the file can then be opened.- any subsequent attempts to open the file either either try to open the file with a PDF viewer or present a dialog of PDF viewers.- Toggling "Make available offline" off and then back on returns to * above.can then be selected and the option "every time" can be selected- This appears to affect all released version of Dropbox for the past few years.
The workaround of uninstall-reinstall dropbox app worked for me.
I can open keepass file again so long as I choose "just this once".
This has been a poor user experience and I'm disappointed by how Dropbox has acted here.
This problem seems to have been quietly fixed now. I'm not sure since when but I can now open Keepass files correctly, and it remembers the app I've selected to do it.
