Will deactivating my own Dropbox account delete photos from my friend's account too?

A good friend has sent me a link to share her very precious photos, so I opened a Dropbox account.

In total they are 4.3gb, too large for a basic free account, but I didn't know this until I had added them to my account.

I have now downloaded them all to a hard drive as the free 2gb Dropbox was not big enough.

If I delete the photos and close my drop box account will I be deleting the photos on her Dropbox account too?

I can't risk doing that!

If you were invited to a shared folder and you added it to your account, anything you do in that folder will sync back to all other members. Add a file and it's added for everyone. Delete a file and it's deleted for everyone. If you want to remove the share from your account, you can remove your access to the share and remove it from your account.

If, however, you received a shared link to a folder, this would be a read-only method of sharing. The folder would only be in your account taking up space if you chose the save to Dropbox option. If that's the case, you can freely delete anything in the folder and it won't affect the original sender.

Thank you for your reply, I think It maybe a shared link I received in a text msg but I'm not 100% certain.

The folder shows in my account and the photos are taking up my storage space but they are not read only as I have the option to edit them.

In this case it sounds like you're referring to a shared folder, since it's taking up space for your Dropbox account.
