My friend's wedding photos have been deleted by Dropbox. Is there a way to restore them?

Hi,

I need some help. I haven't used Dropbox in a while, and I received a notice indicating that I need more storage on my free plan. It seems that Dropbox has deleted some files, including my wedding photos, which are very sentimental to me.

:(

If I upgrade to a paid plan, will I be able to restore the lost files? I'm frustrated that Dropbox requires a payment to resolve this issue. I wanted to contact Dropbox directly for confirmation, but I've found that to be impossible.

If anyone can guide me on what to do next, I would greatly appreciate it.

Hmm, if you never received emails that your files would get deleted or that they did get deleted, then they probably didn't get deleted by Dropbox; you would have gotten a few email notifications about it before it even happened.

Could you check your spam folder, to see if those emails ended up there?

Otherwise, I'd check the following:

Whether you never actually uploaded the files to the account and they were just shared with you through a link
Or whether you have another Dropbox account under a different email address where the files might be stored.

Hi @KW81, I’m sorry to hear about your experience.

Did you check your Deleted files page and Events? Are you able to restore your Dropbox files via those pages, or are you asked to upgrade due to lack of space?

Regarding your files getting deleted in the first place, can you let me know when this happened exactly? From what I understand, they were deleted because your Dropbox account went over-quota, as mentioned here.

Thanks for getting back to me. I know it's so frustrating. I've checked both the Deleted files page and Events; it's not there. I think I'm asked to upgrade, as I have hit 2GB on the free plan.

As for why? I'm not 100% sure; I think I might have gone over. But the files were uploaded and there for a while. Then I got a message that Dropbox would start to delete things if I didn't upgrade. I checked the wedding photo file; it shows the link, but nothing is there.

I've had a look at one of my recent emails from Dropbox, and it says -

You’re over your Dropbox storage limit, which means a few things are on hold:

Syncing: Your files aren’t updating across devices
Uploads: You can’t add new items to your account

There’s no need to delete anything—we’ve got more space and tools to help you get back on track. But I uploaded before this; I remember seeing everything in the folder. I'm so confused.

So if I upgrade, will I see the deleted folder again is it on hold until I have more storage?

Any help would be amazing.

Did you actually receive an email saying that your files got deleted? Would you mind sending us a screenshot?

And just to make sure, did the email go to the address associated with your Dropbox account here, or to a different one?

I remember seeing a banner or pop-up on Dropbox or something saying files have been deleted in red. I've had a look through my emails, and nothing says anything about deleting, but it has been deleted because it's not there. Yes, that's the correct email address. I don't have a screenshot.

If they've been deleted upgrading wont make any difference. However, syncing would start again.

Dropbox does delete things if you are over quota and if thats the case (based on your email) then they are not recoverable.

Did you check what www.dropbox.com/events shows?

After checking another email account linked to my name, I finally found the folder. What a relief! :)

I thought it might still be there, especially since the link was still showing up.
