Can I manually limit the number of older versions for my Dropbox Backup files?

Hi everyone,

I'm using Dropbox Backup and I would like to understand how version control works.

Is it possible to limit the number of backup versions per file? For example, can I set Dropbox to keep only the 10 most recent versions of a file, automatically deleting the oldest one when a new version is created?

Alternatively, do I need to manually delete old versions?

Is there an option for automatic deletion based on the age of a version (e.g. after a certain number of days)?

Hey @AlexKr, thanks for posting your question here.

At the moment, it’s not possible to manually delete older versions of your Dropbox backups, or select how many versions will be saved on your Dropbox account.

However, depending on your plan’s version history window, previous versions of files are automatically removed and no longer recoverable after 30 days have passed (for Basic/Plus accounts).

Just to clarify — based on the automatic backup schedule, do all backup versions keep accumulating indefinitely until the 30-day version history limit is reached?

In other words, if backups are created frequently, will all versions be stored (regardless of storage space) and only start getting deleted after 30 days — without any limit on the number or size of the versions before that?

Hey @AlexKr, I hope it's okay for me to jump in here as well!

According to the info currently available to us, the Dropbox Backup files should follow the restoration window of your current plan.

So, as Nancy mentioned, any versions that have been backed up to your Dropbox account, regardless of the space they amount to, if they exceed the recovery window of your plan, wouldn't be recoverable.
