Why did I get an email about an unknown referral from 2012?

Hi, I got a Referral Thanks email today from an address I don't recognize. In my account it shows that it was done in 2012, which is strange, as I do not remember giving out my referral URL and would have no reason to. There is no unusual login, device, or unauthorized file access that I can see. Are people able to put in emails during sign up in place of a referral URL? I'm confused about how this happened and why I received an email today for something supposedly done in 2012.

So at some point (in 2012!) somebody has signed up via your referral link or because they joined a shared folder you created - that long ago that also used to work and issue referral space. 2012 is when they were referred and signed up but for whatever reason its took to today for them to actually meet the requirements of the promo. That means its probably only today they have installed the desktop client on their machine.

If you go to https://www.dropbox.com/account/referrals you can see all the referrals on your account and where they are at :)

So basically, dont panic over it - and enjoy the free space!
