Dropbox can't delete files on its own. It's simply not capable of it. If a file is being deleted, then either you, another process on your device or someone else with access to the folder is deleting the file.
Restore one of the deleted files and then look at its version history. It will show you the device where the deletion occurred. Check that device for anything that could be deleting the file(s).
Dropbox cannot delete files automatically so something is happening to do it.
If you click on a file and restore it and then click on 'View Previous Versions' one you will be able to see where/when it was deleted and see and by who and where. That may give some clues as to what/where and who is going doing it
Its strange , there seems to be some problem with dropbox , i have 22 GB storage in my account , presently using around 18 GB and files are getting deleted . This raises question marks on the safety of data at dropbox. Anybody pl help
Hi @iasstudygroup, let's jump right to it!
Is the content that's getting deleted part of a shared folder?
Can you clarify, what your Events page at www.dropbox.com/events shows? This page gives you an overview of all activity in your account including files events (adds/edits/deletes), as well as adding or removing shared folders.
Keep me posted, and we'll take it from there!
only files from folders getting deleted , everytime i have restore
yes folders are mostly shared
Hi @iasstudygroup, since the folders are mostly shared, then it could be a different member deleting content from there.
Because all shared folder members have access to the folder and its content -especially if they have editing access-, have you checked to make sure if that's the case?
i have 22 GB in my account , i am a user 20 years old, contributed/recommended more than 500 user in the beginning . Why i am not allowed to use 22 GB , i have earned it. It seems to be highly unethical or a technical glitch. pl act rationally
Hey @iasstudygroup, why do you think that you're not allowed to use your earned free space?
Regarding the deleted files, when you restore them, have you tried checking their version history, to see which user or which device is deleting the files?
Hi guys , just 24 minutes ago , my more tan 500 files got deleted from dropbox. there was no name who deleted it. Is dropbox safe. Pl suggest
There is no name of the deleted person. Its very strange , same happened earlier , its happening on regular basis now. Pl check the bug. It casts doubts on safety of dropbox.
Hi @iasstudygroup, have you used the filter on the right of the deleted files page to only show deletions from your own account?
This is an instance when there is no name shown in the deletions.
pl address my basic issue
Have you looked at this post as to why files could be getting deleted from your account without notice?
It may be deleted or the Dropbox system is corrupted. I just had several thousand files deleted. That incident led me to this article

HI @Bach Huy Hoang, it sounds like something on your machine is causing these files to be deleted, or even 'appearing' to be deleted according to the Dropbox service.
Are the files all in a specific folder, or randomly located on your account?
Are these folder all private folders, or shared folders? According to the version history of one of the files, what are the details for the deletion event?
Have you already tried contacting the support team directly regarding this matter?
Hey @Bach Huy Hoang, if you go through s restored file's version history, you should see more info, like the name of the device the files were deleted from; perhaps that will give you some more insight as to what happened.
I got an answer from dropbox support and I also looked at the version history. But it doesn't solve the question of why thousands of files can be deleted at once. Delete many folders in many places, and delete files in many folders but do not delete the folder. It could just be the machine doing it. Suppose you have 1000 folders with deleted files in them, deleting files randomly and not in order, is it possible for a human to do that once? Are there any computer viruses that do this? Or is there a problem with Dropbox? I'm quite confused and worried.
Hey @Bach Huy Hoang, on our end we wouldn't be able to identify why this is happening, just the device this is happening from.
It might be a shared folder, where members are deleting content, or even another program that edited or deleted the content.
Do you have antivirus software or another cloud provider, such as Time Machine, local backup software?
These might delete files depending on their own settings.
Aside from viruses, there could be other factors at work here. Have you confirmed according to the version history that the files are being deleted by that specific machine on your account?
Is the Dropbox folder on an external drive? Are you using any kind of virtual machine or remote login of any sort? Since the deletion of files appears to be random, do you have any programs which could quarantine or move files out of the Dropbox folder for any reason?
