Get me out of Family Plan and Back to my normal plan

My plan was cancelled just an hour ago due to being added to a family plan accidentally by my client, and I just want my own plan back. If I go to leave the family plan, as suggested, I am only allowed to cancel the plan, and then it says that some of my files may be deleted due to going to basic. I don't want basic, I just want my old plan back. Can someone help? I cannot lose any files and want OUT of this family plan.

Hi there, @AlyssaWarnock, let's jump right into this!

Let's break things down. Keep in mind that if you joined a Family plan as a member and had an active paid Dropbox subscription before joining, your individual account should be automatically refunded for the prorated cost of your original plan when you joined the Family plan.

Now if you leave the Family plan, your account will be downgraded to a free Dropbox Basic plan, but you can then choose and upgrade to any individual plan that fits your needs.

When you leave the Family plan, you’ll keep all your files and folders, but you’ll lose access to the Family Room folder and the shared storage and features of the Family plan. If you exceed the storage quota of your new plan, Dropbox will stop syncing files to your devices, but you’ll still be able to access your files online.

This just happened to me, too. Very unprofessional on the party of Dropbox. I will be looking for another service who I can trust not to change terms on me without clear notification.

I'd like to hear more about what went wrong, though, or what went unexpectedly.

Did you not receive your prorated refund when you joined the Family plan, or lose access to personal files when you left it?

With my personal plan I had 2TB for *my* files. With the family plan, I am sharing 2TB with the other members. I don't have visibility in how much data each member has stored, and I don't have the ability to manage the space available to me. I also cannot manage the account - if the owner decides to cancel it without warning, I suddenly have 30 days to re-establish my personal account - what if I am on vacation or otherwise unavailable when that happens?

I have been using Dropbox for security and peace of mind about my data. By giving up management of my account, and the space available to me, I don't feel secure. I would not have joined the family plan if those conditions were made clear to me in the invitation. Now I need to figure out what is the best path for me to follow to regain that security.

That's not really Dropbox's fault though, is it? Dropbox made it clear you were joining a new service and changing the operations via email; you accepted that of your own free will, without checking or doing any due diligence (and let's be honest here, we all just click "OK, OK, OK" on stuff without reading it). They didnt just change without notification, they asked if you'd like to do something and you accepted.

Hi @jjkunce, do you have the option to leave the Family plan, in order to revert your account to a personal plan?

This way, you'll be able to upgrade to a Plus plan for your account, which would be 2 TB for your account only.

First, it wasn't a solicitation from Dropbox. It was an invitation from a family member. I know they use that to suck you in, and it worked. But they are losing money, because I paid more for my own account. Why would they suck me in to downgrade?

Second, and more important, here's what the invite said:

As a member, you'll have access to 2 TB (2,000 GB) of storage and premium features at no cost to you. The plan makes it super easy to share with others, but you’ll still have your own personal Dropbox account, just for you

2TB is what I had in my existing plan. It says I will still my own personal account. Is there any hint there that they would be taking space away from me? Any hint that I'd be giving up control of my account? There's not even a hint that it would cost less and I would get a refund - which is super weird.

Go ahead and make excuses for the company. And go ahead with the caveat emptor line. But, this is just plain unprofessional and incompetent. The issue is not so much the change of plan, but lack of confidence that my data is safe with them.
