I replaced some subfolders in a folder, but the subfolders are now empty.

Hi all,

I uploaded some folders into Dropbox and wanted to share them. The folder to share, consisting of subfolders, appeared too big for some one with a free account. So I replaced the subfolders and share them. Unfortunately the subfolders appeared to be empty after replacement.

I tried to follow instructions but, my dropbox account is very messy because of all the things I tried before. So, I want to leave it with this and clean up my account first. Then I will try to follow your suggestions again and come back here if I have further questions.

Forgot to mention: Before replacing them I renamed the subfolders. The renamed subfolders are empty.

How did you rename them and if it was on a computer did you give it time to sync? Do you have enough space on your account?

I have enough space and gave enough time. I added a number before the name: 0 name subfolder

Which Dropbox platform did you use to do this?

Dropbox Plus on a desktop PC. What I did: selected the subfolder > replace > Dropbox > New folder > named it with a number in front of the original name > okay. The subfolder showed in the line of all my folders in Dropbox. All the folders are empty. But....for whatever reason all the renamed folders, with the original name (name without the number in front) are in my Dropbox overview and with their original content. So that;'s strange but okay; I have not lost anything. But...I tried to share those folders with some one else and that doesn't work since they are empty.

Could you kindly send us a couple of screenshots of these folders as they appear on your device, and online?

Have you tried manually replacing the empty folders, and swapping them with the actual ones that have your content in them?

Actually, I decided to send the folders by Swisstransfer. So did not try to replace anything. The renamed folders are empty in my Dropbox as well. In the middle of the page I am asked to put something in there to upload; which I do not understand by the way. I am not sure I understand the screenshots you want. I mentioned the name of the folders as they show in Dropbox: 0 name etc. In my Dropbox I see those folders and they are empty. I also see those folders without the number before the name, and those are filled with content. I tried to share those last folders as well, but they are empty for my colleague. So, Swisstransfer.

Let's see, so you mentioned that you performed the steps to replace the subfolders in your local Dropbox folder on your PC, right?

The Dropbox folder is just a normal folder on your computer, just with syncing abilities.

That means that any actions you take, like the steps you mentioned, are controlled by your OS, not by the Dropbox app.

So, basically, there's no way for us to know exactly what happened and why.

If you follow the same steps again now, do you get the same behavior?

Or if instead of the "replace" option, you just select the files you want and copy or move them to the new subfolders, does that work?
