"Access Denied" error when accessing shared folder due to lack of Dropbox space

Hello, I’m a new Dropbox user.

I’m trying to use Dropbox for my company, and I was invited to a shared folder that’s already part of a paid plan.

However, when I try to open it, I get an “Access Denied” message saying that my storage is full and that I need to upgrade to 2TB.

As far as I know, I should be able to access the shared folder without having to pay for extra storage myself.

What should I do?

I only need to view and download the files in the shared folder, not edit or upload anything.

Hi there, @clear554, thanks for posting to the Dropbox Community!

The truth here is that when you add a shared folder to your account, the folder will take up space in your account as well, not just the owner's.

Since you only need view/download access, though, the owner of the folder can send you a "view-only" link instead, which won't affect your available space at all.

I’d like to not only view the files, but also edit them.

If I want the owner’s shared folder to be included in my account storage, is upgrading my own plan (paid storage increase) the only option?

The folder owner is using a team plan (Standard), not a personal account. They said that in this case, my personal storage limit shouldn’t matter, and other team members are indeed using it without any issues.
However, for some reason, I’m the only one being told that I need to upgrade my account and pay for more storage space in order to access the folder.

Could you please explain why this is happening?

Hi from me too, @clear554! To clarify, would you like to join that Dropbox team as well, and become a team member?

If yes, then the admin of the team can send you an invitation, so that you can be added as a team member and share the team quota. This way, you should be able to access the shared folder indeed without worrying about having enough storage to edit it.

From what you’ve mentioned, it sounds like you’re currently on a free Basic plan, which is personal, so you need to have enough storage, in order to add shared folders/files to your Dropbox account.
