The option to remove myself from a shared folder is not appearing.

Just like others have shared, the option to remove myself from a shared folder is not appearing. I needed to upload some large files to an organization's dropbox, which is owned by the organization. I am not the owner of any of the individual files or folders yet I still can't remove myself. I also am technically out of space so I can't add the last file I need to for this folder -_-...

I am thinking if I can remove myself and then re-add it, I can add that last file and be done with it. I don't need access to it regularly, the whole point is transferring these files to this organization.

That wouldnt work I'm afraid. Because if you re-add it then it would download everything that was in the folder back to your account anyway IF it even lets you add it - you cannot add a share which will take you over quota.

I was able to delete the main folder I was uploading to as an editor then uploading the other file to the main directory of folders and telling the administrator to move it in there...Then I undeleted the folder and it's giving me all sorts of grumpy you're over the limit messages, but at least everything is there that needs to be and can be accessed since I'm not the owner. This should work until about 6 months from now when we host another webinar -_-...

If you are just uploading to somebody why not just ask for a Request Link?

It's super frustrating and apparently a new wrinkle to dropbox. I was the one who recommended we use this for large files and the organization has a pro account so I didn't think it would be an issue. I'll look into this when we have other webinars, that's the part I was planning to upload along with some other publications, but after this whole adventure, I'll give up on publications -_-

We primarily use Google Drive and I've always found dropbox easier to use when sending links for outside folks to view and download. That was going to be the whole point of this organizational pro Dropbox along with storage of large files that would consume our entire quota. At least we got those files up, I call that a win but Dropbox is really closing itself up to being a useful platform anymore. Especially when there are so many other competitors out there....what a shame!

Shared folders have always used the quota up of all accounts within the share (unlike Google etc.). So 2gb of files in a share takes 2gb of quota from everybody in it. This isn't something that's changed unfortunately.

It is to stop people 'stacking' accounts to get loads of free space basically - which is necessary given how Dropbox doesn't get any other revenue for accounts that are open unlike Google which uses advertising sales etc.

I used to share large folders of content without an issue, but now there's all these barriers to uploading and using it. This is definitely within the last two years as we have had student workers where I basically mirrored our server folder for them to use remotely and it was fine. We're not even talking that amount of data here and, if your assertion is correct, then no one else is going to be able to upload to the entire folder. Wow...Again, at least we got the folders up that aren't in the Google Drive. Times change and companies do as well, I understand. This just left a bad taste for me and I will definitely not be recommending using Dropbox in the future to anyone else that's for sure! Way to alienate some longtime users!! I also noticed they limit customer support to essentially this chat, they certainly have their base users in mind and anyone else outside their bubble is not important.

Mark is correct. Shared folders have always worked this way. Nothing has changed in the way shared folders work for as long as I can remember. If you have a need to upload a large amount of data to someone else's account, without having to upgrade your account as well, the a File Request is the best option.
