I had a personal Dropbox that I accidentally merge with a Business account by using the same email. How can I get my personal Dropbox back with the email and content that is now associated with business Dropbox login.
A business account shares with a non-business accounts = merging.
They didn't share with you. They invited you to join their business account. If they had sent you a regular shared folder invitation, your account would not have been merged into the business.
And how to get help?
Have the team admin for the business account contact Support and request that your account be restored. They will have access to phone support. Also, refer to the bottom of this help article.
and you don't even get a notification on whether the ticket is received.
If you opened a ticket, you can track it at the link below. Also, refer to the bottom of this help article.
Hey @patbeennettaz, sorry to hear about this, but not to worry, the solution is pretty simple!
The admin of the team will just need to convert your account back to an individual.
To do so, they'll need to follow the steps in this article.
I hope this helps!
I do appreciate the prompt response. I hope that I can get a quick response from the admin. One issue that you have not resolved, or rather, you have not indicated that it would be resolved. I recognize that I made a mistake, but the effect of the mistake has been large. Please tell me what steps you will take to ensure that this sort of mistake will not be repeated by some other hapless user?

We don't work for Dropbox. We're just regular users like yourself. Could the on-boarding process for new team members be better? Perhaps, but all the information needed is presented while you're joining a team. Most issues like this come from either not reading the full content, or not understanding it and then proceeding anyway. There's not much Dropbox can do to fix that.
To elaborate a bit on what Mark mentioned above, the team admin needs to convert your account back to an individual account. It's important that they don't just remove you from the team as doing so would delete your account. If that were to happen, the team admin only has seven days to restore your account.
Mark and Rich,I apologize for misunderstanding your roles. Your service to the Dropbox community is appreciated.
regards
John
Hi John. Same thing happened to me. Felt sort of ambushed. Seems very poorly thought out to be able to drop your subscription and get all files swallowed up by a client with a single click. Poor engineering. Love how the Dropbox Support email gets an "unmonitored box" response. Really? Working with client admin now to try to get my account back.
And thanks, Rich for pointing me towards a solution.
Hi All. By mistake I merged my Plus Plan to the company one.
Now the Company is closing their account and I would like to keep all my previous file and account items. I can't find anyway to disconnet my personal account from the business to do not lose everything when They will close it.
Thank you

I have a personal Dropbox account for my work as a journalist. My business partner created a new Business Account and invited me to join only to access certain files. When I went to accept the system asked to "merge" the accounts and not understanding what that meant, I clicked yes. Then Dropbox notified me that my personal account was closed and they were refunding me my fee. How do I extricate myself from this? I do not want to own the Business Account or have that for my own Dropbox, I only need access to it. How do I restore my Personal account and revive the subscription? The person who created the new business account says it was a mistake, but doesn't know how to fix it and one can't "call" Dropbox, nor is there a way to change accounts. Help!

When you merged your account into the team account, you effectively made the team the owner of your account. In order to leave the team, the team admin needs to convert your account back to an individual account. It's important that they don't just remove you from the team as doing so would delete your account. If that were to happen, the team admin only has seven days to restore your account.
After your account has been converted back to an individual account you'll be back on the Basic plan. You can then resubscribe to Plus, Professional, etc.
Thanks so much for the info. We were able to get into the Admin portion and speak to a Dropbox team member who walked us through the steps to revert the account.
same thing happened to me! crazy how helpless you all the sudden feel
this should not be this easy to do
Hey! Please help me I'm being charged for a dropbox business account. I didn't mean to have it clicked. A client shared a link to a folder. Now I'm being registered to a business account. I want my original plan to be restored which is 2tb per year only. Please help thank you!
Hey @HazelRevilla, sorry to hear about this.
It sounds like instead of a shared folder, you joined a Dropbox for Business teams account.
In that case, you'll need to ask your team admin to convert your account back to an individual account using these steps.
From there, once your account has been converted, you'll need to upgrade to the plan you were on as desired.
@HazelRevilla wrote:Hi walter, unfortunately I can’t contact my client to make these changes for me. It’s my fault I accidentally clicked the other option which is to join a Dropbox business account. Is there any way I can fix this? Please let me know thank you so much!
If you joined their business account, then only their team admin can resolve this for you. Basically, by joining someone's business account you merged your account into theirs. When this happened you would have received a pro-rated refund for any time remaining on your subscription.
In order to leave the team, the team admin needs to convert your account back to an individual account. It's important that they don't just remove you from the team as doing so would delete your account. If that were to happen, the team admin only has seven days to restore your account. Once your account is converted you'll be back on a Basic (free) account. You can then resubscribe to get back to 2TB of space.
If what you actually mean is that you converted your own account into a Business account that you're the admin of (you mentioned being charged for a Business account above), then you can cancel your Business subscription.
Hi @Rich Thanks for your comment and all of the info.I'm now back at the basic subscription and will now upgrade my plan to 2tb.But my worry is, I will be charged 2 times as I have received an email when I got into the dropbox business account:"Your previous Dropbox Plus subscription has been cancelled and we've issued $96.89 to your original payment method for the remaining value of your subscription. "
Will I be charged twice? Or just continue with the billing of the 2tb subscription? Thanks!
Hi @HazelRevilla, I'd be happy to answer this one for you!
Essentially when you joined the Business team, you must have received a refund for the remaining period of the Plus plan you'd paid.
Therefore now, you'd need to re-upgrade from scratch.
I hope that clarifies.
I literally cannot believe this is an actual thing within Dropbox. It just happened to me. I have no idea when the client can get back to me about it and I absolutely did not want this to happen. I was skeptical upon seeing the option to merge accounts but I sort of assumed there was just something new going on with Dropbox and trusted the process. I'll NEVER do that again. This is a huge problem and will most likely be ending my 7-8 year stint with Dropbox over this. Absolutely unacceptable performance.
I have this same issue - in reverting to an individual account at the Basic Plan, will I lose content as the space required will need to be upgraded immediately?
Hi @gryphonox, I'd be happy to answer this for you!
If you joined a Business team, and you want to revert back to an individual plan the best way to go on about it is to ask for the admin to convert your account, following these steps.
Now onto your question: Please be aware that if your account is ever downgraded, Dropbox will not delete any of your files.
If you are over quota all that should happen is that Dropbox will not sync any new files.
Let me know in case you have any questions.
This is the most horrible and frightening user experience I had for years.
I'm seriously considering to cancel my (and my employees) dropbox-subscription (which I have for more than 10 years) and switch to owncloud.
I have had my own dropbox for YEARS. I am a freelance designer. Today a client sent me an invitation to join their Dropbox team (is that the correct language?) which I stupidly said YES to. Now MY dropbox appears to be THEIR dropbox, along with all my other clients folders and info. How do I revert to my old dropbox? Or how can I fix this mess. I am livid. TYIA
Hi @Lou22, sorry to hear that!
I've merged your post under a similar thread, just to keep everything at one place.
Essentially, you would need to reach out to the Team's admin, and ask them to revert you back to an individual account. Feel free to have a look into this thread.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate!
I have had a personal account for awhile. A client recently invited me to their Dropbox Business Account. I accepted and then received a notification that my personal account was receiving a refund. I don't want to be part of this client's Dropbox Business subscription. How can I undo this?

YOU can't. Only the team admin can do it.
By accepting an invitation to join a Business team you merged your account into theirs, making them the owner of your account. When this happens you receive a prorated refund for the time remaining on your account. If this wasn't your intent or you no longer want to be a part of the team, you need to ask the team admin to convert your account back to an individual account. It's very important that they don't just remove you from the team as doing so would delete your account. If that were to happen, they only have seven days to restore the account.
Once your account has been converted back to an individual account, you'll be back on the Basic plan. You'll need to resubscribe to the plan you had previously.
When I worked recently with an NGO on a project, their business account took over my personal account. They shared files with me and all was OK. But when the project finished, they terminated my membership and instead of returning to my personal account, I am locked out of it because - I am told - me email address is no longer valid. So I cannot access any of the folders that were on my personal account, and I stood to lose everything. When I went back to the NGO, they reinstated my membership, so I can see all my original folders. BUT.... how can I get out from this org's business account and restore my personal account?
Hi @EGuy, and thanks for posting this on the forum!
In this case, the admin of your Business team will need to follow the steps @Rich provided above and convert your account to an individual one again.
If you have any further questions though, let me know.
Is this serious? This just happened to me and my whole life is unable to be accessed now.
Is there a way to contact DropBox to find my personal account? This can't be true.
