Yesterday I downloaded the latest version of Dropbox from https://www.dropbox.com/install. The installer is a Universal binary. This installed version 116.4.368, which is Intel only. At least, that was the version number reported by the Finder’s Get Info window immediately after installation. After launching Dropbox I noticed the version number has changed. It is now 117.3.353, also Intel only.

There still appears to be no native Apple Silicon version available anywhere.

If you want to avoid install betas, just turn off "Early releases" in your account settings.

I don’t see that option. I don’t know if it is on. There is no setting I can find on the Dropbox website, either.

🙂 I have never said to look on Account Preferences, what you are actually doing! In my post is "Account Settings". 😉 Follow the link and find "Early releases" there. Make sure it's turn off. Since your version is automatically updated to beta, this is turn definitely on now.

Ah, found it. I was searching for instances of the word "Beta". I see the option is on. Since my goal is to have a native Apple Silicon version of Dropbox and this setting so far has no effect on that I think I’ll leave it on. If a stable native version eventually is available it will probably appear there first.

@Emma Stable does not equal Native. It doesn’t appear that this version is native, as it is an older version number than what I have installed (118.3.421) and what I have still relies on Rosetta 2. So when will an Apple Silicon Native build of Dropbox arrive, in beta or stable?

As others have stated, this does not address my issue. I am looking for native Apple Silicon support four months after Apple Silicon Macs have shipped and nine months after devkits were available. Dropbox should have stable native Apple Silicon software by now.

Every major piece of software I use has been updated to run natively on Apple Silicon. This delay from Dropbox is alarming.

I already pay Apple for iCloud space -- should I shift everything there if Macs (and, therefore, the iPhones and iPads I use with my Mac) are not going to be well-supported by Dropbox?

I agree on the Apple Silicon native support.

I guess it is a bit harder because other Sync services seem to have similar problems releasing a Universal version from their apps, which I can understand. No response from Dropbox is not ok.

I'm still on the monthly plan because I generally do not like the desktop client too much at the moment, lack of a Universal app, high resource usage and lack of response from Dropbox keeps me from really investing in the solution. The main reason I started using Dropbox is Scrivener and better MacOS Bundles support, but it seems I need to start rethinking this decision.

I own a Mac with Apple Silicon M1 and I find unbelievable that Dropbox as a giant company still has no native M1 version. Apple Silicon support is very uncomplicated to achieve and there are already thousands (millions?) of those chips out there and this year even more (not to mention that the architecture is 100% the same as all iPhones and iPad ). That the company still had for example a beta version I would understand, but still nothing. Dropbox-thought "as long as Rosetta 2 works, why bother?"...

I'm not going to add anything new to what has already been posted here but I want to state how suprised and disapointed I am, that Dropbox hasn't launched an Apple M1 native app yet. Are you at least working on one??

Any news on this, Dropbox? It's been over a year and still no M1 support. Shaaaaaaame.
An update is urgently required so all us M1 users can finally start working again without all current issues.

Because if they're not keeping current on this, then what other performance or security improvements to MacOS are they also not using.

Well, it’s been 22 weeks and so far nothing. Doesn’t speak well of their credibility (saying a build was weeks from shipping) or competence.

Rosetta version of DropBox is taking around 1gb of Ram on my computer. Apple M1 apps takes less memory.
I'm already searching for an alternative service after more than 10years here. I'm tired of poor support and lack of communication.

A native Apple Silicon version looks like a long way ahead. Apple Silicon Macs have tighter security which prevents system extensions (which Dropbox uses) from running until the user boots into Recovery mode and enable them. This makes installing Dropbox more difficult for the average user, which is probably why no native version is available.

I can understand, from a support view that Dropbox is hesitant to have users go through the procedure, but they lack in communication about the reason a native Apple Silicon version does not exist yet. The current version runs OK on my Intel machine, but uses too much resources on my M1 Macbook, but this is also due to having a lot of bloat in the new application which I do not need and if not fixed will probably make me switch to another cloud service, enough choices out there... 🙂

It looks like Dropbox (and other sync services) will 'need' to switch their apps to the File Provider Framework from Apple, which is built in the OS and is also used by iCloud (https://developer.apple.com/documentation/fileprovider)

I switched to another service, that runs natively on M1 since monthes, offers a comparable kind of service and only take less than 100Mb of Memory. It is apparently possible to do so, but DropBox seems to not be ready for that kind of work.

Come now, you can't say "another service" and not tell us which one! 🙂

I, personally, am setting up (well, have set up) a NextCloud server on a Raspberry Pi and am considering moving the data and functionality for which I use Dropbox to it. It doesn't have some key handy features of Dropbox Pro though (namely smart sync), so I wouldn't recommend it as a Dropbox replacement.

I know Sync.com has a M1 native client. It also has e2e encryption, which is nice but does have some downsides (does not do block-level file sync).

The level of integration possibilities with Dropbox are really great, also it works pretty stable for me know. I just don’t like the bulky client with bells & whistles I do not use but take up memory. I tried https://github.com/SamSchott/maestral but it is a bit limited.

I gave PCloud a try. M1 support, multiple folders/discs sync, paid option encrypted sync. Interface is kind of old school but I found it finally as simple to use with good organisation. It fits me well since two months.
