Dropbox Paper leave a shared document or folder

I am having a problem, I read an article about how to manage projects using paper, the article had a link to a sample Paper Document, I clicked on it and I was added to the Document list of people who can see and commend along with a couple hundred more that also clicked the link, now that I looked at the file I want to remove it from my Paper Docs, but I cannot find the option to do so, I can archive my own documents and eventually delete them, but I cannot remove or leave that document that was "shared" with me.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I am new to Dropbox Paper, I manage my notes elsewher but want to move all of them to Paper, I will pull the trigger once I can also have offline access to those notes on my Mac.

Hey @Kris89, while we’re gathering all the relevant feedback internally, kindly note that it’s possible to be removed from a shared Paper doc by contacting the Owner. Have you asked them to remove your access by any chance? Please let me know & I’ll do my best to further advise. Thanks!

The issue here is you're not listening to what we're saying Jane – we don't want to reach out to owners to have ourselves removed. We should have the ability to remove ourselves without needing to contact the author.

Jane, Are you kidding us? It takes your developers several hours to implement this functionality.

Hi Jane,
Thank you for your feedback. As a business owner, we use Dropbox professionally to share files. The very basic of it without fireworks. It works great!

Paper, is more like a collaborative tool. So we tried it a couple weeks when it launched but realized its not adapted to our reality. So we completely stop using it and now we have a better way to collaborate with documents even with our clients.

When a company like Dropbox do not seems to care about people’s need, cause we really need to be able to remove ourself from a document, they will see their clients jump off the ship.

I think I should be able to remove myself no matter what permissions I have on a document. I really don't want to have a bunch of Paper documents that someone has shared with me and I no longer wish to be a part of stuck with me.

I've already got documents and templates colleagues have shared with me that do not understand how or have the desire to take the time to remove me. Therefore, I want to be able to get out of those documents.

I don't think you guys are understanding how important this is to solve.

I viewed a doc someone shared with me. The fact there is no way to remove myself from that doc so it doesn't appear in my account is a huge fail.

To work on complex projects I need to keep my space organized. If you don't allow me to unfollow or delete docs I previewed just doesn't make sense for me to use your tool.

I'm facing the same issue as many others, where I'm unable to remove myself from documents I have viewed. I should not have to contact the document owner to remove me, I should be able to just remove myself. I have a paid subscription with dropbox for more than 2 years now. If this issue does not get solved and I continue to see poorly support that dropbox gives I'll definetly cancel my subscription and move to some other cloud storage provider.

Amazingly this is the very reason I no longer pay Dropbox for a premium account and NO longer use Paper. If a company cannot resolve something so simple and dont want to lissen to their paying users then I dont want to be associated with them.

Agree with everyone else here who's outraged.

Get this - I can still view a bunch of documents from an ex-employer because they were accidentally shared to my dormant personal account because my gmail was stuck in the internal google directory from an initial consultancy period before I joined fulltime.

Perhaps your enterprise security team can get a little spooked now and dedicate some engineering resource to resolving this? Or will you wait til it blows up in your face and tanks your stock price?

Just want to add to this thread- it is annoying I cannot remove shared docs NOT OWNED ME from my list in the 'Paper Home' page. I understand I could reach out to the owner of the doc, but this is annoying. I simply want the ability, by myself, to remove docs that are cluttering the 'All' section of the paper home view. I should be able to archive, remove, or hide these docs without any other user action.

This is actually a pretty bad privacy issue. As as been mentioned it's possible for anyone that a document has been shared with to see email addresses of the other recipients. If the owner of the document has become dormant it's impossible for my to remove my details from being shared.

For projects that span organisations, or in the cases when employees leave a company, this situation also means that recipients can not remove themselves from having access. Sure legally the onus is likely with the document owner but this puts recipients in a very awkward sitation, especially if the contents of the documents are sensitive, controvertial or illegal.

Beyond all this, it's simply a terrible user experience to disempower users from beign able to control and declutter their own home screens. This is a fundamental bug.

i second everybody here who asks for a decent way to remove oneself from a paper document — without reaching out to the owner or anybody else.

we are sharing (everybody with the link is an editor) one document with over 300 individuals right now, some of whom never or no longer want that document on their own dashboard, regardless of whether it counts against their dropbox size or not. right now they keep archiving it — without even knowing that they thus archive it for everybody else as well

@Jane, I appreciate your ongoing efforts for the last 2+ years — but I do not get what you obviously do not get: your proposed solution for those 2+ years ("ask the owner to remove you") just does not fit a streamlined collaboration workflow efficiently.

why not offer a button "leave document" instead of that bold "invite" button on the very top?

or at the very least have a "leave" in the "..." ellipsis menu: instead of the infamous "archive"-option (which should be available for the owner only)

and could you please remove that "Solved: " from the title? it just does not ring true for so many of your users

Since this is an issue for a very very long time. It not only does Dropbox not listens to it's paying users, it also shows that Dropbox does not repsect the privacy of it's paying users. Dropbox forces me to contact the owner just to opt-out of an invitation I do not want to be involved anymore or being reminded about. Dropbox pushes me in unwanted personal situations I do not want.

Its been almost 2 years since I made this post and the issue still there, I have stoped using Paper entirely and now use Apple free Notes App, they made a lot of improvements that simply werer not there in 2017, now I can share notes and remove members or those members can also remove themselfs if they choose to do so, pretty simple and logical.

Needless to say that I am dissapointed at the Dropbox team for not fixing such an easy thing, I bet this will take a dev no more than 1 hour to fix, yet they just don't care.

I was one of the first few Dropboxers to invite lots of users to the platform and was super exited when it was new, now for simple file sharing there are a lot of other options, and for collaborating others are coming up too.

Dropbox do all your paper users a favor and allow them to be removed from shared documents, stop making your users angry and make them feel like you don't care.

I agree with everyone on this thread. I had plans to start using paper, but this bug is just completely unacceptable. And it is here, after 2 years!?!

I am having the same problem. This a joke! It's funny how they are just pretending that unfollowing the document solves the issue. It doesn't, and asking another person to remove you from a file is not a solution.

It's wasting everyones's time.

This issue is making me not use Paper at all, as my organization is HUGE and I can't get rid of all the junk that is shared with me! I can't even choose to "unfollow" a folder. Gonna use a different platform. Too bad.

I'm really annoyed by this. People have been complaining forever. It's so infuriating that I'm in the process of abandoning Dropbox Paper, and Dropbox will be losing my paid subscription.

Here is one more trying-not-to-be-upset vote for fixing this. I was added to a number of DB Paper documents years ago as part of a consulting project. The owners and editors have since been "deleted" (see attached image). The lucky souls have been released from Paper Prison while I and the other poor "Viewer" were not so fortunate.

We were merely visiting - trying to help some people in a bind. But now the parole board, guards and warden have all left the facility. I know the key to this annoying Paper Box is just down the hall buried in a stack of Jira. @Jane comes by occasionally to patiently hear our pleas for parole. She even sometimes calls down the cell block to the product owner and dev team apparently preserving the Paper project prioritization pile as a pillow, perplexed as to Paper's plummeting praxis & profits. Pity.

Yeah, I was thinking about starting to use Paper, but couldn't clear out my workspace, came here to see this... No thanks, this is a minor thing to fix, and a huge annoyance to users. It's a red flag that Dropbox isn't serious about the product.

it´s now 2020 and I have completly the same problem. Clicked on an old Paper Dokument link to see if there are still important infos for me. After that I wanted to delete it from my list or leave it, so that I don´t have to see it in my list anymore. The answers are still the same like here. "Ask the owner to kick you out or "archive" it. Archiving doesn´t help, it just keeps being there. Absolutly useless and bad experience. I feel the same. I also will never click anymore on a paper dokument and I´m also thinking to leave Dropbox completly and go with another cloud system as I feel they are cutting my freedoms here. 2 years later and no solution. That´s insane. I think if the owner changed his email address or just don´t answer, you will be aaaaaaalways in that paper dokument. And yes. I also got pre prepared mails and stuff where they are ass friendly and talk about god and the world but the problem is still there. Also 2 years after.

This Issue and the fact that Dropbox and Papers Folder structures are seperated.

And just to steal a march on the incoming auto-reply: Any hints to the „share idea“-Thread is unnecessary. This issues are years old, people are craving and tons of pro-users don't use paper because of these two inconsistent elements.

I would never cancel my pro-account because dropbox has become essential for my daily life.

But no development on years old features, that seem to make a difference for a huge part of the community. And to be honest: this massive amount of just a few but heavily used textexpander-like sentences from the team - premade standard auto-replys – feel like an insult to any paying client .

Can we please get a definitive answer to this problem. What's the plan of the Dropbox Team? if you are no longer interested in supporting the product then it's better to be upfront with users and let them know before they invest more time in it and add more documents which would make the migration more difficult down the line.
