Decode webhook`s notification request json Delta.Users

I have stablished an IIS (.net) Web site to receive the Dropbox`s Webhook file change notifications and it is working now. I have a question:

I am receiving many requests, all with the same value for List_folder.Accounts and Delta.Users. I decode the Email of that account, It`s an Email for another Dropbox`s account of my own, but my tries to decode Delta.Users and finding the folder, was failed.

I have tried these .net codes:

var listFolderArg = new ListFolderArg($"ns:{NotificationJson.Delta.Users[0]}");

ListFolderResult listFolderResult = await dropboxClient.Files.ListFolderAsync(listFolderArg);

Result: ==> ListFolderError: path/not_found/

and this:
var listFolderArg = new ListFolderArg("");
PathRoot.NamespaceId pathRoot = new PathRoot.NamespaceId(NotificationJson.Delta.Users[0]);

ListFolderResult listFolderResult = await dropboxClient.Files.ListFolderAsync(listFolderArg);

Result: ==> PathRootException: no_permission/

What should I do to decode Delta.Users[0]?

Hi @Esikhoob,

You are encountering the error when listing files and folders because the value from delta.users is a Dropbox user ID, and it is being passed as a namespace_id.

A user ID and a namespace_id are different identifiers. Therefore, using the user ID in a call such as PathRoot.NamespaceId(...) or as an ns: path can result in errors such as no_permission or path/not_found.

For webhook notifications, we recommend using the list_folder.accounts field in the webhook payload. The values in this field are Dropbox account_ids and can be used to identify which connected account has changes.

Thanks for following up.

Unfortunately, we don't currently have a Dropbox API webhook example specifically for .NET.

Regarding the Python example, redis_client is not part of the Dropbox API or Dropbox SDK. The example uses a Redis client library to store and retrieve information such as the OAuth access token and cursor associated with each Dropbox account.

Redis is simply the storage mechanism chosen for the Python example. Please note that Redis is not required to use Dropbox webhooks, and you can use a different storage solution appropriate for your .NET application.

So far we have one Dropbox`a account with one DropboxRefreshToken which our application create and upload files into it.

Now for the purpose of understanding which files are changing in this one account, we had to have many DropboxRefreshToken for all users that have a shared folder in this one account.

Is it right?

Hi @Esikhoob,

Please bear in mind that Dropbox refresh tokens are used to generate new short-lived access tokens, which are then used to call Dropbox API endpoints.

In relation to detecting changes within a particular shared folder, you can use the authorization for a single Dropbox account that has access to that shared folder, provided the shared folder is mounted and accessible within that account. You can then use webhooks to be notified when changes occur and the relevant Dropbox API endpoints to retrieve those changes.

It is not necessary for every user who has access to the shared folder to separately authorize your application just to detect changes within that shared folder.
