Would love for Dropbox to lower their monthly costs since they are providing the same service for years and have mainly removed platforms that I personally use.
Dropbox hasnt removed paper?
You can access it via https://www.dropbox.com/paper
Ah, sorry, I misspoke. Vault, not Paper.
Dropbox Passwords going away is such a huge disappointment. It was the perfect solution for me. I just want to manage my passwords via the cloud service that is already central to my digital life, not shell out more cash for yet another niche subscription service like 1Password, nor deal with whatever weird KeePass fork happens to be the least janky this year.
In my 16 years of being a happy Dropbox subscriber, the company's failure to maintain Passwords is definitely my biggest letdown.
I've been a loyal Dropbox customer for many years. I pay for the convenience, but cancelling Passwords is not convenient at all. I would also expect ~6 months for something this major. I'm definitely going to be looking for Dropbox alternatives now.
Agreed with the above sentiment. I am not interested in another 'niche' subscription. Unfortunately, this will push me towards the 'duopoly'. Such a disappointment. It looks the most cost effective option will be take up the 1password option (to enable crossplatfrom use), and move my data to Onedrive (which i already pay for) and cancel Dropbox Family.
Same thing: VERY DISAPPOINTED with the removal of the password app. I already pay a family Microsoft 365 with Onedrive storage that I wasn't really using, but now with this big let down from Dropbox I will finally cancel my EXPENSIVE and many years long subscription to save some money for a new (and unexpected) password service monthly bill.
Shame on you Dropbox: reducing services while keeping the subscription cost the same.
100% agree. I only ever used Vault and Passwords, and now there is nothing differentiating Dropbox and the other cheaper alternatives. This is a massive disappointment. Guess I'll have to start migrating all my files to another service.....
I started my Dropbox subscription only to use Dropbox Password. But I'm really considering canceling my subscription now since I have to pay for another password manager provider, which is the main service I need.
$120/yr is not worth it for a solution that feels incomplete.
Hi @Gabriel P.,
Thank you for posting on the Community Forum. I completely understand your frustration after learning that Passwords will be discontinued.
We will be posting more information regarding Passwords deprecation soon and I appreciate all of the feedback received. I'll personally pass it on internally through the right channels.
Not only are they removing Password, but the timescale is terribly short. During the holiday season you get effectively a month before the functionality of Passwords is downgraded. For me that is effectively 1 week! That is not the way you should treat customers. I will use that week to consider other solutions, not only as alternative for passwords, but as an alternative for Dropbox as a whole. You know, customers can only vote with their feet.
I don't think anyone asked for new features at the expense of the password feature. It's been an integral part of the service we pay for. We don't want to deal with yet another supplier and subscription. This is a big letdown.
Dropbox you still have time to reverse this. Your users hate this change.
They removed the app for mac as well... but discontinuing passwords is a much biger problem for me. I am too stupid to move my dropbox-passwords to Apple's keychain via the CVS-file; so I might have to switch manually... definitely thinking about cancelling my dropbox subscription
Also annoyed at this, especially at the shortness of notice. I have send a question to support:
Hi, following the recent announcement that passwords will be discontinued I wanted to ask if this would result in a reduction in our subscription fees? If it's not going to cost $1.50/month (as per your recommended provider) I believe that should result in a similar reduction in our fees.
Well, at least they should double this reduction. As we need to handle 2 different suppliers instead of one. And I als believe the $1.50/month is for one year only?
Hi everyone,
We wanted to acknowledge the feedback you've shared, as it's invaluable to us.
We understand that if there's any disruption to your workflow, this might be frustrating, and we wanted to reassure you, once more, that your thoughts have been passed on internally.
For anyone who might not have seen the relevant details about this change, feel free to check out this article.
Thanks.
It's really sad that after 15 years of using Dropbox that I'll end up cancelling my membership because the two most useful features (Vault and Passwords) are no longer available.
There are cheaper alternatives to Dropbox now, and without these features I don't see why I would continue to pay more.
I really hope they reverse this decision, but if not then this will be the last time I pay for a Dropbox service.
My reply from DropBox support:
----------------------------
You're absolutely right to ask if the subscription fees are to be adjusted in relation to this development. However, at the moment, there are no plans regarding the adjustment of the Dropbox subscription prices. If such a thing happens in the future you will be informed accordingly. The price of your plan will remain unchanged for the time being. The decision to discontinue Dropbox Passwords was tough but it was also made as part of an effort to focus on enhancing existing Dropbox features. You can find more information about the discontinuation of Dropbox Passwords in this Help center article: https://help.dropbox.com/installs/dropbox-passwords-discontinuation
They treat costumers very poorly with this kind of reply.
Hi Hannah. Any news from the team?
I get that they have to make business decisions that may not line up with everyone's needs, but that comes at a cost. I've been a 2TB customer for over a decade, and having the price increase over the years has been fine since I got a lot of value out of the storage and Passwords app. Now that the Passwords app is being tossed, and I don't use any of the other features Dropbox considers more important, I guess it's time to make a move. I wish I didn't have to, but when a software company goes in a direction that doesn't benefit you anymore, it's necessary.
@aL_br As of now, the response Adam Daniel shared from support should be everyone's expectation until we hear otherwise.
I just changed to the Business Suite of Proton. Includes Drive (1TB), Passwords, VPN and more that I don't use yet for the same price. And Proton is located in Switzerland with the strictest privacy laws on the planet. So POTUS can not look into my files anymore.
I was going to make this its own post, but the Dropbox forums keep choking on vaguely defined "html errors," so I'm going to drop it here instead...
So, quite a few folks are already pretty unhappy about the discontinuation of Dropbox Passwords. The tragically short timeline didn't help; Dropbox first posted about it on August 1, with some functionality scheduled to disappear in less than a month, before the end of August. Not a lot of time for busy people to research and sort out the alternative that works best for them.
But today I'm realizing that even their short timeline was... dishonest, and that the reality is even worse.
We're not even two weeks after the initial announcement, and they've already managed to hamstring both my Passwords browser extension AND my phone app. On both, where you'd typically see your list of accounts, that real estate as been completely taken over by the discontinuation announcement. Normally, you'd expect this kind of thing to be a pop-up that you could acknowledge, close, and continue using the app. Not the case here, from what I can tell.
So now, weeks before the first stage of the discontinuation was scheduled to take place, I simply can't use core features of the Passwords browser app from the drop-down browser icon anymore. Of course I can still open the full Passwords interface in a tab (via the "Open Dropbox Passwords" option), but that's simply not how I use Passwords 95% of the time. So it's pretty annoying and inconvenient... but to be fair, not a complete dealbreaker.
It is a complete dealbreaker on my phone app, however. The Passwords Android app now gives users two options: "Export passwords," or "Learn" more about the discontinuation. That's it. Meaning that there's literally no option to actually use the app and search or view or use my actual passwords. The search bar is still there on-screen, but it literally doesn't do anything.
This is infuriating. I'm going on a business trip next week, and now suddenly I need to carve out time to migrate my passwords before I go, despite Dropbox's official discontinuation timeline telling us all otherwise. And of course we're not going to get any kind of real world solution to these issues; just a company rep politely telling us that our concerns have been heard and noted.
Ugh.
Worse than Google... i mean alphabet... This is why i typically don't use google products as they are always quick to 'drop' products and 'no longer support'... The trust is gone.. Poor form drop box. Been a customer for over 15 years but making the move. See ya 😡!
