Afternoon
I'm trying to free up space on my dropbox account but keep getting the message 'Couldn't delete 1 item'
I also get an error when trying to remove access to some on a file.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Matt
Welcome to the Community, @Matt Busfield!
Just to clarify, are you receiving this error message only for a specific file, or multiple ones?
Is this happening for a personal file that you created on your Dropbox account or a shared one instead?
Let me know, and we’ll take it from there.
Hi Nancy
Thanks for the reply. It is happening on all files / folders. Even ones I have created and not shared with anyone.
Regards
Thanks for that, Matt!
Out of curiosity, do you currently have the desktop app installed on your device? If yes, I’d like you to try and delete a file from there and let me know if any type of error message pops up.
Other than that, can you also switch web browsers, and see if the error persists?
I am having the same problem
All my files are resisting being deleted but i am getting plenty of messages to expand my drop box capacity! If you find an answer, I'd be most grateful.
Hi @Tricia51, are you trying to delete the files from the Dropbox site, the mobile app, or via the Dropbox folder on your machine?
Morning
I don't have the desktop app installed (I've always used it through a browser) and I tried this on Chrome, Edge and on an IOS device and get the same results unfortunately.
I could try downloading the app and giving it a go on there if you think that would work?
Hey @Matt Busfield, just to clarify, are you trying to delete your files from the "all files" page or the "Home" page on dropbox.com?
Hi Hannah
I'm trying to do this from the 'All files' section. If I try and delete from the Home section under 'Recent' I get this message....
Hey @Matt Busfield, interesting, thanks for letting us know about that!
Are you certain that the files/folders aren't shared with someone? Also, can you send me a screenshot from the mobile app, when you try to delete the file from there?
Evening
I don't use the mobile app, I use safari as a browser for dropbox login.
I've tried this on shard folders and files and also ones that aren't but the result is the same....
I can't actually remove anyone from any file or folder. I just get this message
Thank you
Thanks for this additional info here, Matt.
Can you please let us know what your main browser is and which version you're using?
Also, have you tried to clear the cache of the browser, to see if that helps?
I've tried it in Edge and Chrome. Just cleared the cache for all time on Chrome and still the same issue 😞
Best Regards
Thanks for trying, Matt! Can you also let us know which browser you mainly use and which version?
No problem
Chrome and Edge are my main browsers both on the latest versions
Hi @Matt Busfield, what OS are you currently running on your device?
Thanks Matt
I managed to do it hooray!
I'm running Windows 10
Morning Tricia
Interested how you managed this as I still have the same problem.
Cheers
Hey @Matt Busfield, can I send you an email, in order for us to have a closer look into this?
Hi Matt
If I got the list of all the folders up in the centre screen, I can rename or delete them through a left click on the 3 dots on the right. The same is true for the files within them. I don't understand why this was so hard to do but it seems to be working now.
I have a similar issue to this post: https://www.dropboxforum.com/t5/Delete-edit-and-organize/Couldn-t-delete-item-I-can-t-delete-any-folder-or-file-or-change/m-p/686574#M39290I am trying to delete an entire folder with many subfolders/files. Deleting the main folder says there are too many files to delete, try deleting with fewer files. If I navigate down to a subfolder with two files (each ~100 bytes), it still says too many files. If I try to delete a single file, I get the error "Couldn't delete 1 file".
This is on the website in AllFiles. I have never synced this folder to my computer that I am trying to delete. It is not shared with anyone and says "Only you" in "Who can access". I do not have the mobile app. I have tried deleting the files/folders in Firefox and Chrome.
Some of the folders I am able to delete, but for the majority of them, I get the error messages above.
Oddly, after an hour it works. But shortly afterwards I get the error again.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention, @tyeik.
Can you please try to clear the cache of your main browser, and check for any pending updates that need to be installed/make sure you’re using the latest browser version?
Also, it’d help if you restored your browser to its default settings and disabled any browser plugins.
Thanks, @Nancy. I have cleared my cache. I do not have any add-ons. I do not have any pending updates. And I have reset the default settings. Moreover, I have tried to delete files on a completely different computer and have the same result.
It would appear to me that if I hit the error "There are too many files in one request. Please retry with fewer files." then I cannot delete anything else again for quite some time. Even if I try to delete a folder with 0 files inside of it.
Sorry to jump in, @tyeik, but the error you mentioned, does it refer to a file request?
Hey @tyeik, would you be able to send us a screenshot of the error, please?
@MeganI can provide a dropbox link to a video as well. But I would rather not post it here since it has some personal information in the file names I am trying to delete. Below are two screenshots, one of the error trying to delete a folder, the other when trying to delete a file.
HI @tyeik, are these files in a team folder, shared folder or a private folder?
Have you tried contacting the support team already regarding this matter?
