I'm missing all my files and folders, the account is empty

I just recently logged into my dropbox and seems like all files and folders gone, I do not have a lot of large files, so the storage should have been ok. I got emails from dropbox saying that I still have space, but never got any email that I was over the limit and needed to upgrade. How to restore files as it looks like it is started back to scratch of 0bytes used of 2GB. When I first logged in, I say a faded folder under Home, then it disappeared and nothing. Pls help to get the files back.

When was the last time you logged into your account prior to now? Do you see any files on the events page or deleted files page?

Are you certain that you're logging into the correct Dropbox account under the same email you've used before?

last time logged in was quite awhile ago. maybe 6-8 months ago. At this point there are no files at all, or nothing in the deleted files page either.

when I log in, it says "not showing" the name of the folder and an error message up top and then everything is blank.

Are there any shared folders that you can join according to this page on your account?

no not really always accessed via the computer. There is a link from my other user when we shared access to the account for the files, - when I click on it goes blank. - https://www.dropbox.com/l/scl/AADrpVVLVjcjeugPn4bucriGr80ZVneNlCg

but you can see the files behind the log in window when click in. but then when try to log in, the files disappear

You mentioned that you've always accessed your files via your computer. When was the last time you saw your files in your Dropbox account online? Did you only use the desktop app to update your files?

Regarding the message, it appears you're seeing this when viewing a shared link or folder, which requires you to log in to Dropbox. I know it might seem trivial, but since it's asking you to "sign up" when you try to access the shared content, it's possible you aren't using the original email address that was invited to it.

Could you double-check that you're signing in with the correct Dropbox account? If you have any other email addresses, please try signing in with those to see if it resolves the issue.

yes, I'm using the same email account that the original link to the shared folder was sent to. I only have 2 accounts that use dropbox, but will try another one.

files will not be deleted correct? I did not get any messages regarding storage is full.

Hey @AshSIHA!

Have you tried signing in to both of your Dropbox accounts to check for your files?

Whether files might be deleted depends on several factors, such as whether it's shared content or if an account has remained inactive. However, as long as your Basic account hasn't exceeded its storage quota, your files should remain intact.

Based on everything that you described it sounds like this isn't the case for you.

Every situation is a bit different, but we'd love to help get to the bottom of this and find out whether the files are still there. Let me know how it goes!

hi, I also checked with a colleague of mine who also has access to the files, he said he logged in about a month ago and they were there. now I just asked him and they are gone for him as well.

Since it was a shared folder, have you (and your colleague) checked your sharing page as well @AshSIHA?

yes, we have, nothing there. it says 0 bytes used of 2GB, so there is nothing in the folders, but it is strange bc sometimes when I log in, I see faded folders from before and then it goes blank when I log in and then they are gone.

Were you the owner of the folder, or was it owned by someone else? If another user owned the folder, is it possible they may have deleted the content or removed your access?

If possible, try reaching out to the person who originally invited you to see if they still have access. Additionally, could you check your Events page to see if there is any history or activity related to the folder there?

hi there was something posted that said I removed my access on sept29. I can’t see what rest of message says though. However never logged in and I would not have done that. Besides why also would remove access for my colleague?

Thank you for the screenshot; it's really helpful to understand what might have happened!

Given that you see on the Events page that "you removed your access" to the folder, if the folder in question isn't available for you to add back here, it means that your membership got removed indeed. Practically, in order to regain access to it, you need to contact the person who invited you to it in the first place.

If you aren't sure or don't remember who the owner is, try looking for the invitation you might have received via email.

It's important to also note here that it isn't possible to see why the membership got revoked, however, we do want to reassure you that if it were possible to work around this, I would have mentioned it first thing.

I will check to see others who have had access to the account. I assume the files are still there, but we have to find the owner and get back access? What if owner doesn't have access either? Did we get hacked?

Hi @AshSIHA, I completely understand how frustrating it is to lose track of important files, and I'd love to help point you in the right direction!

Since I don't have visibility into individual accounts, I can't say for certain how the folder's owner chose to handle the files. As a next step, I'd recommend reaching out to the owner directly and asking them to check their Dropbox account to see if the folder is still there. If not, they can check their events page or sharing tab to see if they can add it back.
