Can't move or rename a shared folder on my account

My student shared a folder with me for a project, call it "StudentX". I want to move this to my folder of shared folders (so that it is at ~/Dropbox/Shared/StudentX".

However, whenever I do this via the command line ("mv StudentX Shared") the folder almost immediately goes back to ~/Dropbox.

The same thing happens when I rename the folder.

When I try to rename on the website by clicking on the edit/rename pencil graphic, it says "You can rename team folders in the Admin console". But when I click on this, it takes me to a new website that asks me for more money.

Note that the dropbox website says that renaming and moving shared folders should be possible for all dropbox users:

"The information in this article applies to all Dropbox users.

You can rename or move a shared folder like any other folder on your hard drive. If you rename or move a shared folder, the folder remains shared. To avoid confusion, the rename or move isn't reflected in the Dropbox accounts of other shared folder members."

As per the message you received, it sounds like you were added to a team folder, and not a shared folder.

Could you confirm this by checking the icon of the folder on the Dropbox site, does it show two people in the folder, a building icon?

Yes, there is an icon of two people on the folder and the word "team" appears in a few of settings menus.

I assumed this was a shared folder because we are sharing it, and it says "shared with other people". But it sounds like there is some technical difference.

Hey @user71! Do you mind sharing a couple of screenshots of what you’re seeing, as well?

More specifically, I would like a visual of what you see when trying to rename this folder via the Dropbox website and of what appears after that when you’re being asked to pay an additional fee.

Other than that, the folder icon that you mention in your last post sounds like this one. Can you please confirm?

The folder icon has two people on it and not a building, which according to the link, means it is a shared folder.

When I click on the Rename pencil icon, it says "You can rename team folders in the Admin console". Then there is a button - "Go to Admin console" which instead takes me to the following website and not to an admin console.

As you're getting that message, it means that the folder could be part of a team folder that the user shared to you.

The admin console is only visible to team admins when on a Dropbox team.

Could you clarify with the user who shared the folder with you if the above is true?

That may be the case, but that behavior is not consistent with the information on the various Dropbox websites, specifically:

The website implies I should be able rename the folder, and that this applies to all users.

Instead, when I try to rename this shared (not team) file, it takes me to a website that prompts me to upgrade my account to a business account.

Hey @user71, let me also jump in here!

As we mentioned before, and based on all the info we've gathered, it looks like you're dealing with a team folder.

There are a couple of ways to resolve the situation you mentioned:

-Either the admin of the team -that shared this folder with you- needs to use these steps, in order to change the top-level management settings to "everyone".

-Or they would need to move said folder within another folder where can-edit access is possible.
