Does anyone know why Dropbox is automatically adding my name to files that I upload when I get a request for upload? Is there anyway to prevent this?
Thank you!
Hi everyone,
I just wanted to provide an update here. It is now possible to submit file requests without including your user name but the action to change the naming convention must be done by the person requesting the file. It's pretty easy and can be done by using the following process.
When creating the File Request, simply click on the trashcan icon next to the "Sender's name" field to remove this from the incoming files.
I hope this makes using File Requests a little bit easier for you all.
Thank you for you patience and for choosing Dropbox!
Have a great day!
Graham
Hey @trebbi, welcome to our Community and happy Monday!
Are you logged in to your Dropbox account when uploading files to the file request?
And are you uploading files from your Dropbox or your computer?
Keep me posted.
Hi Hanna,
When I upload, I am uploading directly from my PC. And in regards to being logged in, I have a two Dropbox accounts, so in the Dropbox App, I'm logged into one account, and on the Dropbox website, I'm logged in through the other account. But I did a test and the issue with adding my name to the file happens from both accounts.
Thanks!

No. Dropbox appends the uploader's name to all files uploaded through a file request. There are no settings to disable this.
I did some tests and when I request files from my two accounts and upload them, my name get added on. But I did a test with a friend, and when he uploaded his file to my request, his name was not added to the file. This is very strange.
Hi @trebbi, how are you?
Let me ask: does your friend have a Dropbox account? If so, are they signed into the account when sending files to you?
Let me know, and we'll take it from there!
@Megan ! I'm good. Thank you! I hope that you're well, too!
My friend said yes and yes to answer your question.
Hi @trebbi, do you use naming conventions on the File Request folder, by any chance?
Can you also use an incognito tab on your end, where you're not logged into your Dropbox account, and then try to upload content to the File Request?
If you leave the name part blank, what do you see as the name of the file?
@Megan , as I see it, the naming convention is automatically added when I create a request. I cannot turn it off?
I've tried uploading when I am not logged in to Dropbox, but then I have to add a name and email address to be able to upload, so those get added anyway.
Hi @trebbi, when you're uploading files via a file request, it isn't possible to remove the username from the file itself to ensure that files can be associated with the person who uploaded them.
If you wish, you can suggest this change for others to vote on, so the dev team can look into this in future!
Thank you, @Jay for clarifying!
Hey
I understand that DB adds the name of the uploader to the file, but it seems random as to whether it adds it to the beginning or end of the filename.
I need the filenames to be consistent, for some external automation - is there any way to specify that the name of the uploader goes at the beginning or end?
Hi @StrawberryR, when you select the file request directly, you can change the naming convention to change the order of the name.
