Access to "Folder" is limited

In the last day or so, I have started to get this error message whenever I try and move a local file:

"Access to "Folder" is imited

We'll keep access to file.tmp the same. Add people to FOLDER too if you want them to have access to anything else in it. How to Manage acess."

Dropbox box then gives me a option to Cancel or Contimue moving. This happens with all locally shared files. I am not sure why all of a sudden this message has started poping up. I have double checked to make the folder is properly shared with me and it is. My boss siad that he has made no changes to the account, so there isn't an issue there. If anyone has ideas on how to fix this, it would be greatly aprreciated!

Hi @Joe F, thanks for checking in.

It sounds like you're navigating through a folder that's in a team folder, but has restricted access.

Since you mention that no permissions were changed, could you send me a screenshot (without any personal info) of the message you get, just to have a better visual of it?

Here is a screen shot of the error message I get. I can also comfirm that this is happening on my work computer and my home computer. This is happening in all forlders in my team folder. FYI, only me and my boss are using this account, and only he has admin rights. He has not made any changes to the account in the last 6 months. Everything in the account seems to show that I have the ability to edit and move files. So I am not sure what has gone wrong here, lol. Thanks for your help!

Out of curiosity, in the error message that you showed it mentioned a specific file name. Is this file perhaps shared with another person apart from yourself and your boss?

Within a team folder, the sharing permissions can be changed very particularly. Access can be given or restricted at subfolder levels or even file level in some cases.

No this file has not been shared with anyone else and this is happening in the entire team folder for every file. I did notice that I only get this warming when moving a file, not when copying, deleting, or creating a new file. Thats what makes it strange. You would think if my access was really restricted, I would not be able to delete a file with getting a warning.

Hi @Joe F, are you able to move the files via the Dropbox site, and not file explorer, directly into the appropriate folders?

Yes I can move files on via the Drop Box website without get the Access Limited error. And just to be clear, I can still move files, I just keep the annoying warming dialog box and have to click Continue Moving.

We appreciate the feedback, as this is a team folder, this would be a security feature to ensure that you're aware that you're moving files to and from the folder itself, which could affect other members.

If you wish, you can suggest and idea to remove this prompt, for others to vote on, so the dev team can look into this in future!

So you are telling me this dialog box is a security feature!?? Was this just implemented? Because it only starting happening last week. And why doesnt my boss get this warning message? And why don't I get this message when I move files via the website, only Windows Exporer? And why don't I get a warning message when I delete a file? Certainly that would affect other users. This doesn't make sense. Can you tell me the history of when this security feature was implemented? ie the date and build?

For deleting files there is a prompt, but you get an option to not show that message again, which is probably why you're not seeing it currently.

The security feature has been around for some time, so we don't have a date for this change. Installing an older version of the Dropbox desktop application wouldn't help here since it would update to the newest version.

I have one client that when she creates a folder inside of a team folder and then moves a file into it, recieves a warning message "Access to <file> is limited. We'll keep access to <file> the same. Add people to <folder> too if you want them to have acccess to anything else in it". We can choose "Continue Moving" and it appears to work as expected. I am unable to reproduce the behavior in my local environment. What is the issue?

So if this warning message has been around for some time, why have I just started seeing it in the last two weeks? I have been using Dropbox for al least 3 years and have never seen this warning dialog. Thats why I was asking about any recent changes to the software. Sorry for pushing the issue Jay, but this really does interfere with my work flow. An interfererence that wasn't there two weeks ago. So I would really like understand why this happened.

I too have started receiving this prompt across hundreds of folders in our Team Dropbox.

We have hundreds of team members and this is now starting to spread throughout other members devices.

As you can imagine, with many team members and many terabytes of files constantly being moved and accessed, this prompt (and every subsequent click to dismiss) is becoming a significant time/resource drain.

If this behaviour is intentional, can a 'Don't show again' prompt be added?

Is there any resolution to avoid this prompt? Our admin/folder access privileges have not been adjusted according to our team admin.

Reporting the issue here too.

Three Mac users all getting this popup when moving a file around within the same team folder. Permissions are consistant between the files and the destination.

Popup started last week.

I started getting this prompt today (Oct 16th) and it is very annoying. Considering I spend a good portion of my day moving files around (each stage puts a file into a different folder), today I was likely prompted over 150 times -- and I'm probably lowballing.

Considering I created the entire dropbox network for my company I fully realize that access is limited, each employee has access to what area their work pertains to. I find it incredibly stupid to be prompted every time I need to move a file.

I created the suggestion (I couldnt find one started), if anyone agrees go upvote it!!

We also have a user with this issue. She has never encountered the error before but has come in this morning and is getting the error message pop up every time she tries to do anything which she's a little frustrated with.

This is only the first time she's seen the error and nothing has changed recently and she's a fairly intensive user of Dropbox.

Working with Dropbox support, started last week, our users get this popup for any file modification/creation/move.

Permissions for teams folder are basic with no limited access, super annoying.

This just started for us as well. We are using dropbox business advanced. This is affecting our productivity and just started recently. Please allow us to remove this message.

We also have same issue. Correspondence with DropBox help is generic explanation of what happens when you move files. Help also recommended using website to move files. Poor answer and refused to recognize that this is a new issue.

NUDGE: DISABLE the prompt! If we have to click to "continue" every single time we move a file or folder, is becoming too slow and reducing workflow!

PLease remove the prompt or provide a checkbox to "don't remind me again" or something like that. this is a REAL PROBLEM!!!

I think our thoughts are pretty clear on this new security feature. We don't like it. It interfears with our work flow. So please remove it.

Lusil this is an absolutely outrageous response. Dressing up a bug as a feature? Is that really what you are resorting to here?

Can you please take this seriously and get this bugged warning removed, or at least let us toggle it off on the tenant if you want to keep pretending it is a useful feature.

I have users who are having to click through this warning literally over 100 times per day.

Do you represent Dropbox when you say this is ok and normal? Or have you gone rogue and you are just trying to manage your KPI's?

Seriously, it's become such an issue, we are considering switching to google drive or one drive so we can get our jobs done. KEEP THE TICKET OPEN LUSIL!!!!

Dropbox, I find your response tone deaf. Clearly there is a usibility problem with this "new feature". My users are losing valuable time navigating past this dialog box. We generate 100s of files programatically in the dropbox folder at a time. The work around is to turn Dropbox off. Again we are paying for Dropbox Business Advanced and it is unuseable. If this is not fixed we will be forced to look for another solution.

Same problem starting recently in macOS. Thanks for starting this thread Joe F. I contacted Dropbox and was told that it's a feature and that I can tell the Finder to not warn me anymore. However, there's no option to turn off future warnings. I'm awaiting a response but this was clearly recently added and the support team didn't get the memo.
