Can't copy a file to Dropbox. I get a storage limit error.

Hi all,

I'm trying to copy files to my dropbox from a link that someone shared with me. I have 2GB of storage free on my account, and the files are around 400MB. However when I try to copy even just one file to my account, it says I've exceeded my storage limit and it won't copy the file.

I've tried clearing cookies, logging out and back in, trying it on a new browser, and even trying it on a new account. Nothing works. I had actually copied a couple files from it the other day and it worked. But now it won't work. Let me know if anyone has any solutions.

To help us get to the bottom of this, could you clarify if the message says you are running out of storage space on your Mac, or if your Dropbox account itself is full?

Is it possible that the user invited you directly to the shared folder instead of sending you a link, or that the shared link has can-edit permissions?

As a quick piece of background, shared folders count toward the storage quota of everyone joined to them. If the folder is too large for your current plan, Dropbox won't be able to add it to your account. To work around this right away, you can ask the owner to send you a view-only shared link instead. This gives you full access to the files online without using up any of your account space.

It is also possible the owner invited you directly to the folder with "can-edit" permissions rather than sending a standard link. If you could send over a quick screenshot of the exact error message you are seeing, that would be incredibly helpful for us to pin down the cause.
