The first thing to remember is that the Dropbox folder on your local drive is a regular folder like any other, and anything in the folder takes up drive space. It is not, by default, a cloud-based or network folder where the content only exists online. Dropbox first and foremost is a sync service, meant to keep the files on your local drive in sync with a copy in the cloud (and on your other devices).
There are way to save local drive space though. You can use Selective Sync to completely remove the local copy of a folder, or you can set a file or folder as Online-only so that it still appears on your local drive, but doesn't take up any space.

Are the files visible in your account if you try to view them through the Dropbox website?
