That didn't work for some reason

I was sent a link. Not a prior user of dropbox, not since it looked like this at least. I don't recall having to subscibe to access something sent to you.

It depends on how the link was created. If the link provides edit access you need to have an account. If it's a shared folder you need to have enough space available in your account to accept it, so if the folder is larger than your account, you would need to upgrade.

It sounds like the link may not have been generated correctly, or it's no longer valid. You'll need to ask the person who sent it to you to generate another one. If you only need view and/or download access, ask them to generate a view-only shared link.

What's interesting to me is the folder is just slightly over 5 gig which is the Dropbox cut-off point for requiring a paid sub. You can access a free trial but only if you sign up for the enterprise-level account. If you cancel your trial ends immediately and you no longer have the over 5 gig limit.
If the purpose of the trial is to test the product why immediately end the access if the auto-renew is stopped by ending the trial? Every other free trial I have ever used gives you the full trial period, whenever you cancel.
This is a great way to trick people into keeping an inappropriately large sub beyond the trial period ($300+). If Dropbox doesn't believe in the value of its offering then tricking large firms to sign up and forget about the cost is an excellent strategy. It makes less sense forcing small operators to sign up for 3 terrabyte plans just to access files which are co-incidently just over the 5 gig free account limit.
