Can you please clarify if this is the first time your shared links get banned or if it has happened in the past too?

Did you get an email from Dropbox informing you about this? If so, when exactly?

this was the first time and yes i got e-mail on 5.1.2023:

I waited then day or so, that 24h suspension would be gone. Yet after 3 days on 8.1.2023 i got another same e-mail for suspension. Since then i just deleted some files from dropbox nothing else. If someone want's to access my public links it says:

Before that it was Error 404 i think.

public links seems to work now. I will upload something up now and then at evening someone will try to download.

Question: i have Basic account, that means 20GB of traffic.

and everything is counting. Is deleting files also included in that traffic (i hope not)?

And, it would be nice to have some traffic counter (daily) in account when u logged in so that we could track it, or is it visible somewhere?

Daily traffic is counted how (regarding time)?

- from midnight to midnight

- from time when first traffic starts + 24h (for example, 11:40 till next day 11:40)

So in terms of what data counts it is ALL shared links, previews of files via links or playing of music/videos on a mobile device or the web etc. So if you have a 2gb video it can probably be watched about 10 times (note that size doesnt always equate to bandwidth).

In terms of the 24 hour window it is a rolling one. So it would currently be (for me) from 11 am yesterday to 11 am now. It will then move as that day goes on.

Dropbox have previously said they will not put a bandwidth limit in as they dont want people 'sailing close to the wind' and using Dropbox as a content distribution type system as thats never what its been designed for.

Public links and all seems to work again. Thank you both.

That i understand, my question is, if deleting files also included in that traffic, meaning....if i delete 2 GB of files from Dropbox, is this 2 GB also counted in traffic?

No uploading and downloading files via your own account (i.e. at www.dropbox.com/home or the web app / mobile apps) is not included 🙂

that referres to other users who use my dropbox? if someone would upload and download files?

So if i upload 2 GB to my dropbox via PC app or mobile, this are not included in that 20 GB traffic? neither if i download it again (as long as i am logged in).

But if i download from public link (that i create)(not logged in), then it is part of traffic.

Yes so you using Dropbox via the website to upload content (a Word doc for example) would not use quota. You downloading direct for your account while logged in would also not use quota.

However, somebody else downloading via a shared link would. Or, playing files on a mobile device (streaming) also uses it.

my final question is, if that happens again by accident (suspension), how longer is then link disabled?

There is no hard and fast answer to that except that everytime the ban gets longer. There is an (unknown) algorithm which takes in to account how long its been since your last ban and how far over you are. So each subsequent ban does get longer but nobody can say for sure by how much

I'm having issues with this too. I'm not sure why I would have been suspended, I hardly use dropbox except to share files for work, and a few things I had saved (not shared) on there around the same time (2015)

Also having the same issue on a "professional" account - asked to find out what links have traffic on them and told by support, sorry cant for privacy reasons. Only resolution is to upgrade from single professional account (1Tb daily limit) to 3 user business account (3x cost) to get 4Tb daily limit.

Useless system if it can't tell the users where the issue lies.

2) Can we know which specific links are suspended when many links are in use at the same time. Is it all links from the user account or just the specific link having generated more than 20 gig of traffic?

Hi @rolejarczyk

1) no there is no log of this

2) it is all links that get suspended. The 20gb limit applies across every single link you share as a total not per file.

Thanks for your answer. I understand the intent of Dropbox, but it is not very usefull to have 102 gig of space available to me (see picture) if I cannot generate more than 20 gig of traffic without my links being suspended for ALL my files at once. Bypass: I have decided to move my largest files to another service. Now, how my friends can get back access to the smallest files still in my Dropbox account? May I send request somewhere or if I must wait an unknown number of days for suspension to be eventually removed ?

If you need more space to share files you can upgrade to a bigger plan: www.dropbox.com/plans. Also remember that Shared Folders do not use up that 20gb/day limit.

And no, I'm afraid you just need to ride out the ban. There isnt a way of having it removed unless you upgrade.

Like the title says, I received notice that my public links were suspended due to excessive bandwidth use. I upgraded to Advanced (yes, I actually purchased it, I didn't just go with the free trial) but the links are still suspended. The email notifying me of the suspension even encouraged me to upgrade my account and provided a link for it, so you'd think that upgrading would automatically cancel the suspension. What gives?

Today I received the same message (copied and pasted below). It's the first time I have ever received a message like this. The strange thing is that the usage noted in the message is different from my actual usage. Is it legitimate?
