Word doc opens in 'view only' mode. How can I edit it?

My document refuses to stay in editing mode. I can still click the button to edit but it's always in 'view only' when I open it. On mobile, I can only edit the duplicate. The button to change it from 'view only' under File says it's to prevent accidental changes. What do I do? Did I make a mistake when I made the document and now it's permanent?

Can you please let me know how exactly you're trying to edit this file when you notice that it's 'view only'?

How large is the file in question by the way? Does this happen with other files as well?

May I ask what kind of file you are trying to edit? (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF?)
