It's honestly a bit sad. I moved all my data to Google Drive last week and finally canceled my Dropbox subscription.
I still think Dropbox has the best desktop sync app on macOS but but when you compare the overall value, Google Drive and OneDrive offer a lot more with their subscriptions.
Dropbox was heading in the right direction with products like Capture, Paper, Passwords, and Vault, but instead of building on them, they ended up discontinuing most of the features I actually used and put their focus on Dash, which I personally have no use for.
The main reasons I decided to leave:
- They discontinued Dropbox Capture, which I used every single day. Even before shutting it down, they kept limiting video recording length. It had become a great replacement for Loom for me.
- They discontinued Dropbox Vault, which I regularly used for storing sensitive files.
- They still don't have a proper Photos app that can compete with something like Google Photos.
- They constantly pushed me to upgrade to a Business plan, even though I was already paying for Dropbox Plus.
I really wanted to keep using Dropbox because the core syncing experience is still the best I've used. But it's difficult to keep paying for a service that's taking useful features away instead of making the product better. I will be back though…if they get their **** together.
