I have uploaded documents accidentally with the same name. The second one has overwritten the first one. Why does dropbox not warn it is a duplicate name? How can I stop it doing this?
Hey @Tobydog20 - sorry to hear you're having issues with this.
Can you please clarify how exactly you're uploading your files to your Dropbox account?
Also, if you could try doing it again as a test and let me know how it's logged in your events page, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks!
This is happening when logged onto Dropbox using my browser on the PC. If I use the app on my android phone it doesn't allow a duplicate name it refuses to upload it and doesn't even create a (1) versio
I see, yes indeed this would be the expected behavior when uploading a file with the same name as another one in the same folder @Tobydog20.
I know it's not optimal, but I'd suggest using the Dropbox mobile app to do this or even the Dropbox desktop app by copying/moving the file(s) inside your Dropbox folder instead of using a web browser.
Let me know if you have anything else to add or ask.
Thank you
Is there a way to create another version when uploading a file with the same name ie
Michelle
Michelle(1)
Etc
Only if you use the apps and not a web browser @Tobydog20.
I hope this helps!
It Doesn't allow me in the app to upload a file of the same name and add an extension on the end automatically.
In that case, I'd recommend renaming it before uploading it @Tobydog20.
I wish I had a better solution than this.
One thing that's caught me out before is assuming cloud storage works like a local folder when it comes to duplicate names. If you regularly update documents, it can be worth adding a simple version number or date to the filename rather than relying on overwriting. It makes it much easier to keep track of changes and avoids any confusion about which file is the latest, especially if more than one person has access to the same folder.
Hi @landlordhec, thanks for your post.
If you wish, you can suggest this change for others to vote on, so the dev team can look into this in future!
