Microsoft Excel file with macros doesn't work when on the drive

Hi I cannot run macros on my excel file thats in dropbox. On the web/desktop version both dont work. I made sure to enable macros (They work if I put the file on my desktop).

I saw a solution to add this trusted site: wopi dropbox com

But in the internet options, it dosent let me says to contact my system adminitrator. Which I am, we use bitdefender as well, I dont know if thats the issue.

Excel online doesnt support Macros I'm afraid.

The only way to run these would be to download to your computer if you havent got Dropbox installed, or, if you have open from inside the \Dropbox folder.

Yes my excel file is in the dropbox folder on my computer, It dosent work from there either!

In Regedit (as admin), navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Excel\Security.

Find or create the DWORD VBAWarnings:

Set value to 1 (Enable all macros without warnings—global for all files; use cautiously as it's less secure).

Alternative: Set to 2 (Disable with notification—prompts on open, but no per-file hassle; click "Enable Content" for trusted files)

So when I set my option to 2, Microsoft is automatically blocking the macros. On opening, I have a message at the top that says Security Risk Microsoft has blocked macros from running because the source of this file is untrusted. I added Dropbox as a trusted site and I still get this error. Any advice or is my only solution to edit the security to 1?

Sorry I am having the same problem as original poster. I had an Excel spreadsheet that has macros that I cannot get to work in the shared drive. I don't know what changed because they used to work but now I can only get it to work if I save it outside of Dropbox or if I remove Dropbox for Teams from Excel. However, if I remove Dropbox for Teams, the auto sync for all files stops working. I did what was suggested here and tried updating the registry to both 1 and 2 but nothing allows me to have the macros run with in the Dropbox shared drive anymore.

Here is the screenshot. I made Dropbox a trusted site, but still can't get rid of this error unless I remove Dropbox from Teams which then eliminates auto sync for all the files.

Can you try the following steps (if you haven't already) and let me know if they help?

Ensure your Dropbox file is fully synced and stored locally on your computer.
Open File Explorer.
Locate your Excel file, right-click it, and select Properties.
- If you see an Unblock button or checkbox, click it and then Apply.
Open Excel.
Click File.
Click Options.
Click Trust Center Settings.
In the Trust Center window, select Trusted Locations
Click Add new location.
Click Browse to locate your local Dropbox folder and select it. Ensure the Subfolders of this location are also trusted box is checked.
Click Ok to add it.
In the Trust Center window, go to Macro Settings.
Select an option that enables macros such as Enable VBA macros.
Click Ok.
Restart Excel and open your file from your trusted Dropbox folder.

@Hannah thanks for these steps. With Dropbox for Teams, the option to Unblock in Properties is no longer available. I verified all the other options had been selected as you detailed, but macros still do not work and I get the same error message.
