Uploading new version of files and keeping the same file links

It would be really helpful if Dropbox offered an Upload New Version option. Both Google Drive and Box have this feature, and it makes file management much smoother.

In Google Drive, you can right-click a file, go to File information, Manage versions, and then upload a new version while keeping the same file link.

In Box, it’s even simpler, you just right-click the file and select Upload New Version directly from the menu.

Having this functionality in Dropbox would allow us to update files without breaking the shared link, which is essential for maintaining consistency when collaborating with teams or external partners.

You can already do that - just replace the file and it will update the file on links that you have. You dont need to do anything special just replace the file. If you have it on a computer just re-save it.

Thanks, Mark! Yes, I'm aware that if you update a file using the same name, it will replace the original and the shared link will remain the same, which is great.

However, the issue comes up when the file name changes. In our case, the creative team is frequently updating decks and renaming them to reflect the version (e.g., Company Deck Q1 2024 to Company Deck Q2 2024). When that happens, there's no way to maintain the same link, and it leads to broken references or outdated links being shared.

That’s why I’m suggesting an Upload New Version feature, being able to manually update a file version regardless of name would really help our workflow and reduce confusion when managing updates.

We don't have the flow you described today and I apologize for the inconvenience.

However, I'd love to understand your workflow a bit better so we can think about the right solution. A few follow up questions:

How is the share link generally shared? e.g. Via Dropbox Share, email, or as an embedded link on some public page etc.?
Where is the file that is being uploaded generally created? Is it on Microsoft Office or Google Office?
Are there other types of files where this type of versioning will be helpful?
Would you expect the recipients to be able to see past versions from the link?

Thanks for getting back to me.

The links are usually shared via Dropbox Share, and they’re also embedded within pitch decks or PDF presentations - for example, a clickable Dropbox link inside a slide.
Most of the files are created using Adobe Suite (Illustrator or Photoshop) and Google Office tools.
This versioning feature would also be extremely helpful for audiovisual content like photos or videos. In those cases, we could manage a single link for a video that has gone through multiple edits.
Ideally, recipients (guests) should not be able to view previous versions - only our team, as the folder admins, should have that access.

We manage a high volume of pitch decks and presentations that contain data requiring frequent updates. Having the “Upload New Version” functionality is very useful for keeping a single shared link with clients that always reflects the most up-to-date version.

Additionally, being able to view previous versions is a great feature on our end, as it allows us to revert changes or download an earlier version of the file if needed.
