I'm asked to join a Team, when a client sends me an invitation to join his folder.

I am a tax preparer in Canada and am having an issue with sharing files with one of my clients. In the past I have created a folder and shared with my client an invitation to put information into a folder which I hold on my dropbox account. After their tax return is complete I put their confidential tax return and signature documents back onto the dropbox that only they and I have access.

My newest client already had a dropbox account and he sent me an invite to view his information on his dropbox. When I click through to view the file, Dropbox tells me I have to join his company account. If I say yes to join, Dropbox tells me I have to change the username and password on my other already established dropbox account before I can access his. So I say no, since I have another staff member who also has access to various files.

My question is - how can I get my new client's information without making a bunch of changes to my own access? Am I missing something?

You weren't invited to a typical shared folder. You were sent an invitation to join their Business team account.

If you join with your existing account, you're effectively transferring ownership of your account to the admin of the team that you're joining. You don't want to do this in your case.

Ask your client to send you an invitation to a shared folder, just like you've always done in the past. They still have that ability, even though they have a team account.

The other option is to just create the shared folder yourself and invite your client to it as you normally would.

Yes @Rich answered my question, and sent me just a folder rather than an invite. I have a new question now. I keep getting a reminder that my client has asked me to join his team. How do I decline his invitation and stop getting these reminders?

Hey from me too @VLock - thanks for getting back to us. When you say reminder, am I safe to assume that you're referring to an email and not an in-app notification? Also, can you clarify if your client has cancelled the team invite as outlined here from their end?

Hey @Walter Yes the reminder is coming in as an email, and is also sitting as an in-app notification - red dot by the bell icon. My client is now out of the country on business so no, I don't think he ever cancelled the invitation. I'm guessing it's up to him to do that.

When it comes to the email notification, when was the last time you received it? As for the in-app notification, have you tried marking it as read?
