There's no "Set naming convention" option when selecting "Organize" from the menu.

Hello,

I am trying to change the default names given to the files I'm uploading to Dropbox.

I would like to rename all my files with the dates they were taken.

I read this can be done from the dropbox.com website, when clicking on the settings gear icon at the end of the folder name (Select Organize --> Click Set naming convention). I tried to do this, but I don't see this option. When I click on Organize, my only option is "Add automation".

What should I do?

Hey @GZ5 - thanks for using Dropbox and welcome to our Community!

You should be able to see the 'Set naming convention' option when you click on the gear icon after you've selected the folder at hand (in the Organize sub-menu)- it sounds like you're clicking on the ellipsis button instead.

Could you give this a go and let me know of any updates?

Is there an option to set a default name for my files that will include the date when the files were created, without adding the word "photo/video" before the date?
For exemple: Jan 23, 2024

Right now the default is Photo Jan 23, 2024 / Video Jan 23, 2024

Those are the options I choose but when new files are added the format appears like this:

In addition, the date is wrong, since this photo was captured on Jan 24, 2024, but it was uploaded today, Jan 25, 2024.

I would love to get your advice.

Hi @GZ5! Sorry to jump in here. I tested this on my end too, but the word “Photo” isn’t added next to the date.

Also, the date that you’re seeing (01/25/2024), is it the date you uploaded these files to Dropbox via the website?

If you happen to have the desktop app installed on your device, can you copy these files to your local Dropbox folder instead, let them sync to the website, and let me know if the original date gets altered again?

Hey @Nancy ! Thank you for replying to my post.

Do you know why when I upload files the words "video/photo" are added while when you are doing this it doesn't? It drives me crazy 😅

As for the other issue: I upload files through the my I-phone and the Dropbox app. I noticed that when I upload photos that I've taken with my phone --> the creation date it accurate, but when I upload files that I received through apps (such as WhatsApp) --> the date changes.

Out of curiosity, have you also tested this via a different web browser and the same thing happens still? I mean regarding the word “photo” being added to your automated files.

Also, the photos that are being uploaded via your mobile app, are they being added to Dropbox automatically (via camera uploads) or are you uploading them manually?

I checked this again and here is a full explanation of what I am looking for and the problems I am facing.

So there are a few issues with the default names:
My goal is to set up a default name as the following: Month, day, year (Jan, 15, 2024).

I am uploading my files manually through the app. The naming of the files changes when I upload them manually in different ways, but even so, I am still unable to achieve my goal (as described above).

The first option (most convenient for me) - Open the Dropbox app, select a location (folder) --> Add files. The name of the file appears like this: Photo/Video Jan, 15, 2024
The second option - From my iPhone gallery I select the files that I would like to upload to Dropbox --> Share it to my Dropbox. The name of the files appears like this: 2024-Jan-15

The default file names that I choose is 2024-Jan-15. Meaning this only works if I upload files according to the second option I described.

My questions:
1) Is there an option to change the default name so that first will be the month, then the day, and lastly the year (Jan 15, 2024)?
2) Is there an option to set this up so I will also be able to upload photos as described in the first option and still get the naming correctly?

Hi again, @GZ5! I had a look with our team in the meantime.

As for the first question, it looks like the available naming conventions have this format at the moment → year, month, date. I’ve sent your feedback about this though to our team; perhaps they’ll change this in the future.

Now, about what we were discussing above, if you try to manually add files via www.dropbox.com instead of the mobile app, do you see the correct naming conventions applied?

How naming convention can be enabled?
I don't have "Set naming convention" option under "Organize" for the Photo upload folder. I have "Add automation" only.

If you go ahead and select “Add automation”, are you seeing the option to set a rule that renames files next?

If you do, please select that one and you should be able to choose/add a naming rule after that, just like you’d do with the “Set naming convention” option.

In case this doesn’t work for you either, please send me one more screenshot of what you see.
