I've unshared many folders, permanently deleted lots of files but dropbox still reports that it is full. How can I free up space? I've already followed dropbox instructions with no results
Permanently deleting files isn't needed to clear space. Simply deleting them is enough. Files in the Deleted Files section do not count against your storage quota.
If Dropbox is saying your account is full, then it's still full. You need to remove enough files to bring your account back below your quota before that message will go away. It could be that you're still a member of a large share that just keeps filling your account as you make more room.
You can verify your storage usage on your Account page. It will show you a breakdown of what's using your storage (regular files, shared files, etc.), which hat may help you identify files that you can remove to free up some more space.
Có cách nào lấy lại files hoặc folder khi ngắt kết nối dropbox với máy tính không? xin cảm ơn!
I have a DropBox Basic account which has a limit of 2.75Gb. I use it mostly for passing family photos around the family.
I have a pile of photos to send but DropBox recently advised me that I need to upgrade as my allowance was nearly full. I have deleted a lot of old photos not wanted any more but the account statement says I am still using half of the 2.75Gb. Checking the individual folders I actually have one small file left.
What else can I do?
What does it show at www.dropbox.com/account and www.dropbox.com/home ?
You also need to change the mindset around volume of file and size. It doesnt matter how many files you have in Dropbox its how big they are that is the issue.
How can I get free space ?
No, going to my account page and seeing the list of files does not tell me what's taking up so much space, because those same files on my computer show only 1/3 the size that Dropbox is telling me! Plus, the list doesn't even include some things in my folder on my computer! And under "Recents" it shows the most recent being from 2019! Which is absurd, as there are photos in the list that were included up to this year, so it looks to me like there's something wrong with how it's functioning. And if the most recent addition was two years ago, why would I only now be getting a notice that I'm almost full? None of this makes a bit of sense, and the fact that nothing, not folders, nor items are given their sizes, certainly doesn't help matters at all.
I finally found directions as to how to make the sizes show up, and see that Dropbox is showing nearly TWO GIGS of files that I months ago removed from my Dropbox folder on my computer. So what do I do to get them off my account online? Do I have to go through and delete each one? Why wouldn't removing them from my Dropbox folder also remove them from my account, isn't that how this works?
thank you
I AM getting to the 2gb capacity and want to erase a Lot of garage i AM sure i have there. Hoe can i get in and clean instead of buying more capacity
Hey @Joaquinbfc, thanks for reaching out!
If you want to delete files from your Dropbox, you can follow the steps in this article.
I hope this helps!
How do I find out what is using my Dropbox storage?
I want to delete EVERYTHING.
How do I delete ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING SINGLE THING IN MY DROPBOX FOLDER???????????????
I MEAN EVERYTHING.
Hey @pforkes!
This page should show you all the files in your Dropbox account.
You can delete any unwanted files from there.
And you can use these steps to calculate the size of your folders and files, in case you want to check out what's taking up your space.
Cabt I just delete photos in Drop Box instead of increasing to 3mg?
Hey @Karen D.22, thanks for reaching out to us.
If you'd like to clear up some space in your Dropbox account, of course you can delete some files, if you don't need them.
Or if you need them, you can download them to your computer first and then delete them.
Thank you!
Not a problem, Karen!
If you need anything else, don't hesitate to let us know.
Have a great week ahead!
Thanks Hannah!
The storage used is shown in the bottom left corner of the home page. When you delete files that value appears not to be updated unless you reload the page after deleting the files, you will then get the new storage used after the files have been deleted.
Need a little help here. Long term user of Basic.
Want to remove unused files, and get back below 2G, and restart sync.
Can't quite get the hang of this. Read the "help" and tried the "AI Chat-Box"
Anyone actually done this?
Thanks

You just need to determine which files you no longer need, then delete them.
What, exactly, are you having trouble with?
Can't find the size, or delete, file FOLDERS
Had all sorts of backup in-advertently enables. So accumulated all orts of stuff I don't need: desktop, screenshots, download ets. could be hundred of files.

You can manage that data on your Backups page.

Looks like this is an old answer and may no longer be valid.
I cut/pasted files from Dropbox to my PC. It still says I'm way over quota. It looked like what's taking up quota is Dropbox\.dropbox.cache\new_files, so I also cut 'em all and pasted them to my PC for backup. It still says I'm way over quota. What can I do? I had a peek inside several of the cached items, and they consist completely of blanks. Is this normal? ...and why does Dropbox continually add these files and never delete them? That's where all the space is being taken up.

The items in the .dropbox.cache folder don't take up space in your account, only on your local drive. The folder is necessary for sync operations. You can delete the content of the folder, but Dropbox will just recreate it as needed. Deleting anything in the folder will have no impact on your space usage.
Your Plan page will show you a breakdown of your space usage. Have you checked your Backups page?
i have a basic plan, i'm slightly over the limit of storage space, i want to delete photos that i've already transferred to my mac but i can't access my dropbox account to do that. it just tells me to get more space. which i don't need. how do i delete photos to free up space? many thanks. karen
Hey @dreampainter, thanks for posting to the Dropbox Community.
Can you go to this page, and let me know if you have any issues accessing your files?
@dreampainter wrote:That link took me to the same page where it tells me I'm out of space and to buy more storage.
Can you provide a screenshot of the full page that you're seeing? Be sure to mask any private information.
Hey @dreampainter, let me also jump in here!
You should be able to attach a screenshot by clicking the camera-like icon when trying to reply back to us.
I'd love to have a visual of what your plan page reports, in order for us to better understand what's taking up space in your account.
Keep me posted!
