Windows Explorer gets slow when trying to access Dropbox a local folder in my hard drive.

I figured out finally what was the cause of this slowness of my dropbox.

I traced up on startup application on my pc and found that youtube through web browser I used to play for music caused the video acceleration workload to my poor video card and it ended up slowness of display on dropbox.

I closed web browser with youtube and the speed of accessing dropbox went up.

So conclusively its more likely my graphics card problem.

Hey @ponge77, let's jump right into this!

If you locate your local Dropbox folder, right click on it and check its Properties approximately how many files do you see there?

Also, if you try to quit the app temporarily, and then access the same content do you notice a difference?

Let me know more, and we'll take it from there!

I also tried to uninstall dropbox app and test many times but all the same as no change.

The size of the folder is 78.4GB

Additionally, this messege appeared recently and never goes off or finish in right cornor of bottom taskbar.

Hey @ponge77, does this only happen with your Dropbox folder and no other folders on your computer?

Also, if you close the Dropbox app and try to replicate the issue, does it persist?

I used to keep all the local dropbox files and folders remain, and only try to index them everytime I reset my dropbox app due to slowness issue.

I suspect that might be the cause so last night I removed all the saved local files and folder and reset my dropbox app from nothing.

Now it looks ok to me without any remained sync stuff on my taskbar.

I will keep using it for a while and if it happens again, I will come back to you.

Its so dissappointed moment that I found my dropbox got slow again this morning.

I reset the dropbox app from nothing again LAST NIGHT!

I have no idea how to handle this problem as it has been a year this problem teased me till now.

This is a serious problem to me as it related directly to my work.

You querry doesnt allow me to upload the movie clip that I have taken so I can't show you how bad it looks of that slowness.

I'm having this exact same problem, and when I quit dropbox, I have no problems/delays accessing the local dropbox folder. The performance is terrific. Soon as I start dropbox, it takes 20-40 seconds to access folders (and usually its L3 and below). The main dropbox folder opens fast, and the second level also opens fast, but soon as I go deeper into subfolders, it's taking forever to browse.

It's been happening for several months now, and I don't recall what the catalyst was/is.

Can you also send me a screenshot of your Dropbox folder's properties, and clarify how many files you have syncing there?

Have you tried fixing the hardlinks & permissions of your Dropbox files, following these steps, by any chance?

If this doesn't make any huge difference, let me know and we'll keep investigating.

I dont use hard links. Did the proceedure any (didn't do anything).

Hey @Doug R.1, do you happen to be running any 3rd party apps like antivirus or firewalls, or VPN/proxy settings on your machine? If so, could you temporarily disable them and let me know how it goes?

No third party firewalls or AV. I have defender and this is my home pc on my network behind a ubnt firewall and an IPS. Nothing has changed on my PC. I can disable windows firewall and defender, and i can place my PC on the DMZ direct internet connection.

No love. Only works when the dropbox app is closed. If there is some port whitelisting or other specific firewall exclusions i should use, let me know. Happy to whitelist what i can.

Would it be possible for you to create a new user profile of the device, and check if the behavior is reproducible there?

It’s possible but the problem with that is the amount to of data that would have to replicate. And in the end, let’s say it works. What would be the answer at at that point? Alternatively. Let’s say it doesn’t work, then what steps would we take?

It might be better to make some assumption and troubleshoot based on that.

Hey @Doug R.1. - instead of creating a new OS profile to test it out, could you alternatively open Windows in Safe Mode and let us know how it goes?

When it comes to your concern, note that if you are not able to reproduce the behavior on the newly created OS profile, it would mean that the issue lies within your original OS profile and it could be due to some sort of mis-configuration, setting, permissions or policy etc.
