Painfully slow uploads from the web as uploads start over, no desktop app too

Just paid for a a 2T Plus account.

The desktop app would not install, no error given, just will not install.

Using the web app and trying to upload 450GB of photos. it is moving very SLOW and saying 2-3 weeks.

I have Comcast with tested D/L speed = 103 Mbps and Upload speed= 20 Mbps,

I have tried with the Nord VPN on and off, no difference, Malwayre bytes is of/removed, no difference.

I get constant "Unresponsive web page notifications"

After 16 hours of uploading, the upload appears to have disappeared,, the black status window in the bottom right of the web page is gone.

I restarted the upload, and it did not pickup where it left off,, it is starting new 😞

I was hoping for a more "polished" and functional product.

Is it is,, it is useless to me.

How does one cancell and get a refund?

Hi there @Nick390 - sorry to hear about this and thanks for the feedback.

Could you please clarify your computer's OS version for us?

When it comes to the issue with installing the desktop app, could you try the offline installer from this page and let me know if the issue persists?

As for the uploading issue, could you clear your browser's cache or try another browser and let me know if you notice any difference?

I am currently trying to install and run the Dropbox windows desktop app first.
It "appears" Drop box has installed on my windows 7 computer.
It went through the install process (downloading, installing), then the install dialog box automatically closes, it then opened a web page about the mobile app, then it opened a larger dialog box about syncing files/folders that I checked off the folder I wanted sync'd.
And Finally I got a "Well Done Drop Box installed" Dialog.
The DB icon is on the windows start menu.
BUT when I try to launch DB from the windows start menu, I get an hour glass for ~5 seconds then nothing. (hour glass disappears)
I went into the windows folder "Program files (x86)/Dropbox/Client and double clicked the dropbox application icon and same result.

What is my next step in trying to get Dropbox to open on my desktop?

I have turned off my VPN, I have turned off windows defender, I have turned off windows firewall, I have turned off Malwarebytes.

Hey @Nick390, thanks for reaching out again.

Do you see a small Dropbox icon in your system tray, by the clock?

That's where you can access the Dropbox application from.

From there you can access the preferences and the Dropbox folder itself, which should also be in your file explorer along with all your Dropbox files.

Yes, I see the icon in the bottom right of the windows bottom bar.

I can open it and get a small window that lets me see the sync history and activity.

I would like to open the full blown desktop application.

Days later still trying to get DB to run,,

So now I have installed the DB windows "APP",, the only thing it does is give you a little app down in the right side of the info bar at the bottom of windows. And that basically open a "File Explorer" window for you to start uploads and syncing,,, I was hoping for some sort of robust windows application, oh well.

So when The file explorer opens I go to my drop box folder and try to start my upload by dragging all my picture folders and dropping them (copy) into the drop box folder.

I get a dialog box stating I do not have enough local storage???? I did set the DB preference to "OFF LINE ONLY" under sync.

This is getting mighty frustrating,,, all I wanted to do was copy my 400GB of family photos so I could share them with my kids and this simple task has turned into a nightmare.

Hi @Nick390, hope it’s OK to jump in.

Can you let me know how much free space you currently have on your local hard drive?

Can you also send me a screenshot of the syncing icons you see next to most of your Dropbox files, so that I can make sure they’re online-only indeed, and not taking up hard drive space?

Finally, I’d like you to click on the small Dropbox icon in your system tray, and tell me what’s your app’s syncing status.

How do I send you screen shots, I'm not seeing a way to add attachments.

I was trying to upload my entire family photos - 450GB.

The free space on my C drive (system drive) was 103 GB

All my photos are in individual sub folders named by date taken.

I was uploading into a folder on DB I named "Family", this folder I had set to "Offline Only"

This was unsuccessful, as I received the "not enough space on local drive"

Last night I attempted to upload only a portion of my picture sub folders - 25GB worth,

This was successful but created a folder on my local drive using up 25GB of space (C/users/nick/dropbox/family and all of the picture subfolders)

Looking at this local folders, the "Family folder" I created is still marked as offline only,, but all the sub folders are not. I had assumed since I created a parent folder that was offline only, all the folders/files I stored in it would be offline only.

How does one upload a COPY of files/folders to Dropbox as a backup without altering the status of the original files/folders on the local drive? I fear that altering the original files and folders status to Offline only could risk them disappearing on my local hard drive.

What I am looking to do is COPY pictures, videos, documents to Dropbox as both safe storage and to be shared/retrieved by family members as I dictate.

Also, My initial frustration was days of "looking for" the Dropbox windows app.

The only thing I have is the icon in the system tray, that opens a small status window that allow preferences, and some other minor thing, and it opens a "Windows file explorer" for you.

I was expecting a full featured desktop application,, there is a dropbox icon on the start menu that does nothing.

I am now assuming there is only the little app on the system tray and the file explorer?

Hi again, Nick!

Indeed, the Dropbox application doesn't have a full blown interface, like other apps; just the Dropbox folder and the menu, which you can access from the Dropbox icon in your system tray.

As for the storage space, when you manually add files to the Dropbox folder, they will initially need to take up space in order to sync.

Once they are synced, you can right click on them and make them "online-only", to free up the space they're taking up.

Since you don't have enough hard drive space, I would suggest adding the files in batches, allowing them to sync and the switching them to online-only.

When you say "right click and make online only",, are you referring to the files that now reside in the C/Users/Nick/Dropbox folder that is eating up my C drive space?

The folder I created in dropbox "Family",, I made it "Online Only" so I assumed all the folders and files I put in there would be online only,, but they are not.

How do I make everything in the folder online only without having to right click each file and sub folder?

Also,, My 20 years of family pictures resides on my D drive,, I copied them (1st batch) into the "Family" folder I created in drop box, and these synced with the dropbox cloud.

Does dropbox have ANY ties to my original pictures on the D drive? My fear is if I make all the files in the dropbox folder Online Only,, somehow my pictures on the D drive will disappear, since they are the "source" .

Hey Nick, happy Monday!

Did the files you added in the "Family" folder get a chance to finish syncing, before you switched the folder to online-only?

When you right-click a folder to make it online-only, indeed, all the files and subfolders in it will become online-only, but only after they've finished uploading/syncing.

As for your second question, about the copies of your photos, as long as they are copies, meaning you didn't move the originals in Dropbox, just created new copies that you added to Dropbox, they're not related to the original files at all; they're considered new files.
