How do I stop syncing to free up ****** drive space?

I need to free up space on my laptop. So I believe that you should stop sync to my harddrive. Once I stop sync, do I simply delete the files on my harddrive, and if I do this, will all my files remain in the cloud. I want to make sure that I don't lose files.

If you're after freeing up ****** drive space, you don't really need to stop syncing.
