no longer have access to the email I signed up with

I need to update my email address in my account because I no longer have access to the original email. If I update it in my account, will it send anything to the old email address? In other words, will I lose access to my account if I try to change the email address from an account I no longer have access to?

If your old email address wasn't verified with Dropbox, you would need to verify the current email before you can change it, which would send something to the old email. You wouldn't lose access to the account, but you could if Dropbox decides to expire your password in the future.

If your email address isn't verified and you don't have access to it, you won't be able to change the email address on the account.

Suddenly Dropbox logged me out and says that email or password is incorrect. I did not change anything. But i have no access to my mailbox, so i cannot reach the reset link to change the password. So, i need Dropbox to change primary email in my profile as it does not exist anymore.

They won't do that. If you don't have access to the email address associated with your Dropbox account, and you're not able to sign in due to a forgotten or expired password, then there's no way to gain access to the account. You need to have access to the email address to either receive the reset information for validate that you're the owner of the account. There's no other way.

But how can I enter my account now? The application logged me off without reason, my old mailbox i used for this account is dead. But there's no my single fault. 😦

If you don't remember your password or it's expired, you can't. You'll need access to the email account. Perhaps you can contact the mail provider and ask that they reactivate the mail account.

You can try contacting Support, but they likely won't give you access to the account.

The thing is that i did not change the password and i remember it. I know, that it is correct. But Dropbox says it is not correct! How can this be? Email provider simply does not exist anymore, there's no contacts.

Passwords periodically expire. This is why it's important to always have a valid email address on any account you use. They are often the only means of getting back in if you ever gain access, and I'm not just referring to Dropbox. If you use that email address with any other service, you should update it immediately.

Visit the Support page while you're NOT signed in to a Dropbox account, including these forums, and you'll see an option for log-in issues. It's best to use an Incognito or Private browsing session to make sure you're not signed in.

There is if you choose the options @Rich said - which is without being logged in and choosing the option for account help.

Note, however, I'd doubt you will get a reply as they will send it to the account you are talking about - one you dont have access to the email of.

You need to scroll down the page @Osbourne and choose one of the two options under the blue Chatbot option.

Do you happen to have any old devices, that might be linked to your Dropbox account? That way you can access them, and download your content.

Hi Megan.

I've been using Dropbox for many years. With the same email & password. There was no reason to change it & i stayed logged in in the nobile application for a long period. On 22/10/22 when i tried to log in on a desktop, where the password was also kept, Dropbox asked me to log in & then replied that the password or login is incorrect. This can not be true because i did not change my password & Dropbox never warned me that i should do that.

Another thing is that mail address that i use for logging here is not functioning properly for a coup;e of years also - this is a matter of business misunderstanding between qip.ru who is the owner of mail & yandex.ru who is the owner of servers. As a result of their relationship i cannot receive mail, but i can enter mailbox & even send.

Now, for the unknown reason, Dropbox logged me off & tells me that password is incorrect, so i have to receive mail to reset it, but there's no possibility to receive mail on the mailbox that i use for logging in Dropbox.

So, what i need, is that someone from Dropbox could send me the reset link to another mailbox, or change the email address for me in my Dropbox profile. Otherwise i am loosing my important files.

Appreciate your help.

Hi @Osbourne, I definitely see where you're coming from, and I want to help as much as possible.

Is there any chance that you have two Dropbox accounts? And that you're trying to access the wrong one?

Also, when was the last time you entered your Dropbox account, before it logged you out?

Hi Megan. Yes, now i've created a second account so i can write here. I used my Google access. But i am taking about my main account, which is [email removed as per Community Guidelines] And i need to restore access to that one. Before they logged me out i was using it on the 9th of october. I can send a message from [email removed as per Community Guidelines] mailbox as a proof that i own it, but i cannot receive mails.

Dropbox logged me off from my account and is telling that my email or password is incorrect. I know it is correct and noone warned me that my password is expired. Mailbox that i use to log in here is partly unavailable - i can only send messages but not receive. So i can not receive a link to reset my password. I asked here and several gurus of Dropbox community were helpless. @Rich @Megan They asked me a lot of questions, i was proving my rights on my account, but still i got no advise - how can i restore access to my dropbox? There should be a procedure on that, otherwise its stupid. I am not a spy, i need just to get my files back. I need Dropbox either to change email in my profile, or send me a link for reset to an alternative email. I can prove again my ownership on my account by sending a confirmation from the corrupted mailbox. Repeating - i can only send from it, but not receive.
