Just updated iPhone and iPad to iOS 14.2. Now, trying to open an encrypted file, it tell me "Decryption Failed. Null" If I open with Excel, it works fine. Anyone else having this issue?
I also have success opening an encrypted file within Dropbox after updated 14.4 IOS update. Thanks for everyone's help and input.
I'm on an iPhone 12 Mini and have just opened and edited an Excel file on my phone, made changes and I have Auto Save turned on. Once done, I exited and closed the MS Office App and closed the Apple Files App. Upon going back into the Apple Files App and opening that Excel file, which of course invokes the MS Office app and opens the file in Excel, I saw that it had saved my change. I do not have Office 365 and I have not signed in to the MS Office App on my phone.
Martz and Nealwald, I'm done with this! Kinda sorry I even started it! Anyway, I've got my workaround and it's time to move on. Take Care!
Ha ha ha, I know how you feel, believe me. I no longer have Dropbox as an open tab in my browser becuase I get tired of repeating the same old work around. If people would only read through all the posts, like I did, they would find their solutions as many here have posted them. Still, I like to help those in need so when I see the topic pop up in my email, I'm inclinded to take a look :grimacing:
A subscription is the key word. I did buy the 365 update for my laptop and guess what? That's an annual renewal! I miss the days of having programs on CDs...and yes, I hope to always have a laptop with a dvd drive.

What's a DVD Drive? Ha ha ha, just joking. My wife's laptop doesn't have a DVD/CD drive but Apple has given us what they call Remote Disc so at least that lets us load from or burn onto the DVD/CD drive in my older Mac. However, I must say, I don't remember when the last time was I had to use it.
Anyway, I normally stay away from anything with a subscription which is why I was happy to see that Apple and Microsoft offers their MS Office app for free download. That said, I just received a notice of End of Support for Microsofts Office for Mac 2016 as they move almost entirely to an annual subscription. They are however still offering their 2019 version for $150 and I'd rather buy that than their subscription service. If at some point Microsoft forces us to buy into the subscription, I will transfer all my Excel and Word docs over to Apples Numbers and Pages and stuff Microsoft in the trash bin where they belong :-0
For those having trouble figuring out how to get their file into Apples File App on their iPhone/iPad, here are four screenshots from my iPhone on how I do it, do them in number sequence, should work.
1. Email yourself the file
2. Send the file from your Apple Mail app straight to your Apple Files app
3. Save the file to your Files app under On My iPhone (or iPad as the case may be)
4. Open the file
I am having the same issue.
Hey @alvileomatthew, I moved your post here where other users have expressed the same issue.
Have a look at what is mentioned and let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks!
I am having the same problem, can someone please tell me what to do to fix this issue so I can use my Dropbox on my phone.
Yes, read every post and you'll find a workaround!
Install Excel on your iPhone and you can open password protected/encrypted files with no problem.
I loaded Excel onto my iPad Air and it still comes up with the Decryption Fail error message. This has to be a Dropbox issue as too many people are experiencing the same proble.
I have iPad and iPhone. You cannot open within Dropbox but need to send it to the Excel app from Dropbox with the boxed arrow icon. Once in the Excel app you open with your encryption password.
WOW that wasn't a very helpful answer since there are hundreds of posts and not many direct answers. I found a work around but not an answer to fix the problem.
i have same issue - only mechanism I find that works is to use the (open) button at bottom middle of iphone screen and that opens with excel and i can input password. The error seems to have something to do with IOS 14.x (I'm on IOS 14.3), dropbox and MS apps....
If you read the thread, that method (open from Dropbox into Word or Excel) is the only go-around available at this time until it seems Apple wishes to fix the IOS issue.
Thanks - this works fine
I have the same issue as all who have posted. Work-around works.
Good Afternoon community,
Please can anyone tell me if DB has fixed this problem in collaboration with Apple / MS yet? It still appears to be impossible to add a password to an MS Word Document then get it to open on the phone app. Mac OS seems to be just fine as previously stated by original poster (John).
Everyone is talking about Excel but I don't have ANY saved Excel files in Dropbox, only WORD files.
The problem only appears on my phone iPhone 11, NOT my computer. Dropbox.
I have not found a useful thread about this issue yet and do not understand some of the remarks people are saying, they are obviously more computer techno savvy than me.
Some people talk about resaving WORD files but how do I do that on my phone if I can't open the file? Do I go into my computer Dropbox and resave all the WORD files in Dropbox to something else. Most are saved as .docx, what I should I try and resave them as?
Do I do this on my computer Dropbox?
Like I say, most of the remarks are not helpful for me.
Right I have installed WORD on my iphone 11 then I have gone into my Dropbox on my PC and re-saved all the WORD docs to Word .docx as some were Macro enabled. Now they all have the Word application on the bottom of the screen when I open Dropbox on my phone so I can finally open all the WORD files this way. Thank you people for your help!
hi,
can you show which square you mean?
found it. it workes. thanks
