Just updated iPhone and iPad to iOS 14.2. Now, trying to open an encrypted file, it tell me "Decryption Failed. Null" If I open with Excel, it works fine. Anyone else having this issue?
I also have success opening an encrypted file within Dropbox after updated 14.4 IOS update. Thanks for everyone's help and input.
I didn't use a pc or Mac ... did it on my ipad. I didn't remove the password either. Problem solved!
Kritzstew,
Do you have Microsoft Office running on your iPad? Or do you have any of the Office stand alone programs like Excel, Word or Powerpoint?
Using stand alone app... but signed into Microsoft office. I don't think the MS app is an issue though... it seems more like a sync issue between IOS & Dropbox... my "work around" just "fixed" my problem... as I mentioned... one encrypted file worked fine the other didn't.
It's not a Dropbox problem, its not a Microsoft problem, its an Apple problem that first started with iOS 4.1 so don't expect anyone other than Apple to fix it. I just installed 14.2.1 on my phone and that did not fix it. The version notes did not mention this issue so I didn't have my hopes up too much.
If you are trying to open a Microsoft Office file (Excel, Word, Powerpoint) that is password protected, you will need to have Microsoft Office or the individual apps (Excel, Word, Powerpoint) on your device. I chose to install Microsoft Office instead of the individual apps just to cut down on the number of app icons on my screens.
If you want to test your devices ability to open a Microsoft password protected file without having Microsoft on your device, just email the encrypted file to yourself and try to open it from within the native Apple Mail app, do not save it anywhere on your device, just tap to open it. If Apple has fixed the issue, it will open otherwise you will get the blank white screen with the words Decryption Failed (null).
I am having the same issue today since updating to IOS 14.2
I am having the same issue even outside of dropbox. It is happening with opening word documents attached to emails.
Right, we are all going to continue to have this issue until Apple releases a fix in a subsequent iOS update. In the meantime, just do as I wrote in this thread and you will be able to open MS Office files on your phone or iPad.
Hi. I had the same issue.
Problems solved: On an Apple iPhone 11 iOS 14.2, use the iOS Files App to open any file. Just enable the OneDrive and Dropbox Sliders under Locations in the Files App.
Hope it works for you guys.
Dear please share in detail, i have the same issue in my iPhone mail app while opening the password protected word or excel files.
Perhaps save the file first to a cloud drive or local.
Although the Apple support site has a number of complaints about this issue logged, it would be good for those who are on this Dropbox forum to log into the Apple site and log your complaint. Apple reviews its own sites, not sure how much they care about this Dropbox site or Microsoft, etc so the more the merrier on the Apple site in terms of us all getting this bug fixed.
There are many posts on this topic but this one seems to have the most views, over 3,500 so why not post your complaint here and make it even bigger to get Apples attention - iOS 14.2 Decryption Fails (null)
Yes. I have the same problem with decryption of excel sheets with Password. Also with VPN Connection to my own Server. With IOS 14.1 and before there was no Problem. Yesterday i contacted Apple Support but no help. I have seen downsizze to 14.1 seems also not possible. What can i do???
Fr5,
Read my earlier post, there is a work around solution for MS Office password protected files
Dont see your post witht he work around. My work around was to open with Excel app option that is on my phone. you may need to download office 365 to your phone for this to work.
Its on page 9, called Interim Success.
I'm getting the (Null) "Decryption Failure" when trying to open an encrypted file (Excel) in the Dropbox IOS app, but the file will open from Dropbox to Excel app with no problem. Frustrating. Occurring since updating IOS as well.

This is an iOS issue unrelated to Dropbox. It happens when opening files from other sources as well; not just Dropbox. It will likely be up to Apple to resolve it with another update to iOS.

Careful when referencing page numbers. They're dependent on your personal display settings for number of posts per page. Best to provide a link to the post from the elipsis menu ( ... ) on the post.
Ugh, really??? That sucks but thanks much for letting me know. Yeah, this Apple issue has a whole lot of Apple users up in arms. The work around is fine for me but I would still rather have it work the way it did prior to 14.2.
Same here. Just been on Dropbox chat. Hopefully apple are aware and working hard to fix it.
We also have an older ipad that is stuck on iOS 12 and that opens the encrypted file with no problem.
Until Apple fixes this, a work-around can be found here.. .. Interim Success
I continue to not be able to log in to any dropbox files on my Iphone- I get the "decryption failed" that everyone is getting. Also, the workaround of opening the document in Microsfot Word app on phone does not work either- document will not display.
Is there anything I can do now or is this truly caused y latest apple update and I just need to wait?
Thanks.
It appeare to have been resolved. Unsure whether an Apple issue or MS Excel Issue. Did not do any further IOS upgrades but did re-save the file on my desktop. The Excel file now decrypts and opens in both my Apple phone and tablet Dropbox app.
Thanks for the response.
I don't see it as having been resolved. As you mentioned, iOS is the same level so what would have solved it? The way to know if it works is to be able to open it from within the Apple Mail app but just touching it, putting in the password and see it open but still be in the Mail app. Is this what is happening with you?
