With my samsung S9 running on android 8.0.0 my dropbox app only uploads the pictures when I open the app.
Before it was uploading always.

This actually may be related to a feature on newer Samsung OS versions called App Optimization. It is designed to freeze applications that are deemed to be untouched by the user and may interfere with some background services. You may find this setting by:

@Lusil I turned that camera uploads back on and that did not do the trick. Not sure what is happening but must have something to do with the latest app update so could you please have the developers check into this? Thank you for your time.

I have had this same problem with a Verizon Samsung Note 8, for as long as I can recall. Extremely annoying, and defeats the purpose of having an App like this.
I am pretty adept at trouble-shooting issues like this, and so already had checked, disabled, re-enabled, etc.:
Battery set to Optimized, then set to High Performance
Verfied that App is *not* set to be Optimized
Verified that App is *not* set to be put to sleep
Dropbox account is perhaps 10% full, and files are the usual jpg's from the Camera, so in the 2mb to 3mb range
Camera Uploads set to upload Photos and Video, disabled, re-enabled, as long as battery is over 10%.
Solid home network using an enterprise grade Araknis Mesh Network, with the problem also present with my prior Asus Router.
Despite all of this, 98% of the time it won't upload my photos until I manually open the Dropbox App on my Note 8.
This is frustrating enough that I will be actively looking for other options if it can't be solved. I've used Dropbox for many, many years, but when basic functionality isn't there, what's the point?

I'm not sure how exactly your application perform service related actions, but if the said in @Walter's post is true, not just some "words" (unintentional error), seems your developmet have reached next fault (as a basic idea - not just typing error). The background services was never guaranteed to run while not used in some active application!!! Recently, they almost mandatory go freezed soon after application detach/unbind (around 10s). Using "Background service" for such job is (softly said) stupid. Possible drawback of such inappropriate use exactly match the "symptoms" described in current thread. There are other services and service-like methods for such jobs (much more appropriate). Pay attention on the Note, below "Background"!

I think I may have fixed this, although I'm not 100% certain what did it. Many settings were disabled and then re-enabled and so forth, but at the moment, Dropbox is consistently uploading my photos to my account.
I think the most pertinent settings are in the Battery...Settings... section, and the most important ones to check there are:
1. Adaptive Battery - make sure this is turned off
2. Put unused apps to sleep - make sure this is turned off
3. Sleeping Apps - make sure Dropbox is not in this list
4. Auto disable unused apps - make sure this is turned off
5. Disabled apps - make sure Dropbox is not in this list
Also check the Dropbox App Permissions, to make sure that it is enabled for:CamerasContactsStorage
Also check on the overall Power Mode, which could be a factor if too much power savings is being enabled.
I'm hoping mine is fixed for good, but only time will tell.
And I wil give props to Dropbox support, as they did contact me by email, and followed up to my replies and so forth.
I have this issue. I have checked all the settings in this thread but still only get images uploading when i open the app and go to the photo tab.

Until yesterday, I thought my problem was completely solved, but it happened again (despite all of the settings being configured as per recommendations, and my last post).
I had taken a number of pictures while now on WiFi. I have Dropbox configured to only upload with WiFi, since I don't have unlimited data. When I returned home, and reconnected to WiFi, those pictures should have automatically uploaded, but they didn't. I had to open the Dropbox App to get this going.
I tested it just now, while on WiFi, and the photo immediately uploaded.
So it seems that when pictures are taken while not on WiFi, they get 'forgotten' by Dropbox, so to speak, as they didn't automatically upload when WiFi was reconnected.
Something for Dropbox to look into.

1. Open the Dropbox app2. Tap the menu3. Tap Settings4. (if applicable) Select the account under which you enabled Camera Uploads5. Under Camera Uploads, tap 'Background Uploading’6. Check it is not set to 'Only while phone is charging'

Checked those items.Background uploading "only while phone is charging" clicked off.You didn't mention the "battery percentage", which is set at 30%. That occasionally catches me, but not often. I changed it to 20%.I have background enabled, upload videos enabled, cellular data eabled, data plan for all files.
Im stuck i have reinstalled, toggled backup over cellular data
Im made sure the app is not on the sleeping list. Yet for long period of time, even when on charger my photos do not backup till i open the app.

January 16, 2020I have a Galaxy Note 10. I've tried all the above and can upload photos only when I open the app.
I just noticed an update in the Google Store two days ago. Could this update solve the problem?
ATTN Dropbox personnel: Please have them add dates and times to this forum to help users determine relevancy.
Also, would you please have the Dropbox App developers post changelogs on the Google Store updates so we can decide if we want to apply the update.

Last night my phone was plugged in (quickly reaching 100% ) and at home on my home WiFi network. The photos I had taken earlier were not uploaded until this AM when I opened the Dropbox app and went to Photos.

Same issue as everyone else. I have a Galaxy S9+, Android 10.
I'll notice that my camera photos haven't been synced in a while, then go to the app, flick OFF camera uploads, close the app, then open the app, flick it back on, and the uploads will continue as normal (until they stop again).
Since then I've followed every tip in this entire thread to no avail.
This has been an issue ever since I got my S9+, a year and a half ago. You'd think that after a few years the smart folks working at Dropbox could figure this issue out, since it seems to be an ongoing issue (just Google it)!

It looks like I solved the problem by unchecking 'only upload when charging' under 'background uploading'.
Now everything seems to be uploading as usual.
Shouldn't have been an issue, as I would leave my phone charging for hours, and nothing would upload. Maybe the app doesn't properly distinguish between charging vs not charging in some phone models...?
