Hi everybody,
We鈥檇 like to provide an update on this topic:
Keep in mind that you can completely hide the Recents section with the new modular home layout on mobile:
1. Open the Dropbox mobile app.
2. Tap the customize icon (artist palette) 馃帹
3. To add or remove a default section, tap the toggle next to Recents, Starred, Camera Uploads.
4. Viewed links, Shared, or Offline.
5. Tap Save to save your changes.
You can find more info in here.
Also, based on your comments, our team is working on improving the recents list update (when an item is deleted remotely). Thank you for sharing your feedback on this.
We'll keep you in the loop for future features related to this.

Wow, what a thread. 聽I am a first time poster to this thread. 聽The new default of taking me to the "Recent files" tab by default has been a real pain and I was Googling how to set the preferences to be the way it used to be. 聽I am amazed that Dropbox has such a resistance to providing an option to keeping the previous (more natural) way of accessing files.
If it helps the Product folks at Dropbox, this is all about too many clicks to reach my files. 聽Yes, I saw the work-around to create a shortcut, but I don't need more icons on my screens to restore previous functionality. 聽
I have been a long time Dropbox user, but recently Google Drive has been easier and easier for me to use and I find myself migrating that direction. 聽Being an early supporter of Dropbox, I find that kinda sad.
I am not angry - Dropbox needs to do what they think is best for their product. 聽However, while this may seem like a small feature change, it really is something that is another pain point that pushes me toward other solutions. 聽Just another data point for the Product folks to consider.
Best of luck.

Dear Dropbox: I think it's time for another update to this thread. Please just post and let us know you're still listening, considering, or possibly even working on a way to deal with this. I can't imagine your'e not looking.聽
Hi all and thanks聽again for your input and patience in this matter.
Tom posted something interesting a few days ago:
Yes, it appears that default behavior is changed. Now opening Dropbox puts you in the file view last used, which will naturally be FILES for serious users. And you can still use RECENTS in those rare events you ever need to.聽
The behavior that Tom is seeing isn't rolled out for all users yet. But it is coming, please bear with us while we're going through this phased rollout. The new behavior will allow you to open the app back on the tab where you left it. This means that if you close the app on the files tab, it'll also open on the files tab. The app will remember this as long as you don't wipe its settings (e.g. upon reinstall or clearing the app's cache).聽
We hope that this will help to address some of the concerns. In the meantime, we'll continue to iterate on Recents and think about other options that were mentioned in this thread previously including clearing the Recents page or hiding certain file types (e.g. photos). Once we decide which way we'll go, we'll let you know
My concern is not only with the issue, my concern is how the developers of the Dropbox could not foresee the issue thousand of people are crying for. There is no explanation for this point so far. Please take this sarcasm :may we raise fund to hire better employees /developers who would be able to see the product from the users' point of view. - Dr Pancholi,MD(Ayurved) ,PhD, MBA(HospMgmt), India.
Sofia,
The new functionality sounds pretty promising and I look forward to trying it out. 聽It isn't easy to determine the functionality that will make the most people happy. 聽Thanks to you and your team for listening and doing your best to incorporate the suggestions that you are receiving from multiple channels.
Can you clarify that the "file view last used" functionality will be available on the Android client?
Actually, never mind. 聽I just tested it on my Galaxy S5 and it appears that if the "Files" tab was the last used, then the "Files" tab is the new default.
Great work. 聽This solves my problem. 聽It also retains the "Recents" tab functionality for those that prefer.
Thanks again. 聽Apparently your team is working late into the night to help. 聽I notice that your last post was early in the morning. 聽:^)
I have files that I have stored in a private password protected folder appearing on my recent list. This is a massive security flaw. Please fix ASAP, never had a problem with Dropbox until this. Going to have to delete my files and account if not resolved soon
Hi Craig,
Thanks for voicing your concerns. Please note though that there are no password protected folders in Dropbox. Currently, the Recents tab will show your activity across your whole Dropbox. You can find more info here:
https://help.dropbox.com/desktop-web/recents-overview
Please let me know if you have any questions about this.

Hi first of all, i love dropbox, it's the best!I like the app it's pretty good
I just have 2 complains
When oppening the app it directly goes to "Recents" i don't like it, i would like to deactivate that feature
And second: I've configured my cellphone to ask the code to ented the and when聽i press the Recent Apps button I can see what im doing in the app, eg. i have a puppy photo open when i press the button i can see that, that didn't happened in Galaxy s6, i would like to see a blank window or something on my S7.Greetings
-Saul
I also have been annoyed that Android opens on Recents. I don't care for that.
I also use Microsoft OneDrive who is now reducing the space people have. I had thought about upgrading my Dropbox membership to cover that, but in light of the poor responsiveness, I think I'll go somewhere else I've seen people mention Box so let me find out what that is.
Recent posters,
聽 I too was annoyed that every time I opened Dropbox, I got the "Recent" tab. 聽However, see Sofia's post two days ago (22 June 2016). 聽They are rolling out a change that takes you to your last tab, not the Recent tab. 聽I can confirm that this works perfectly on my new Galaxy S7 Edge.
聽 Good work, Dropbox team. 聽Thanks for listening!
I'm glad somethings are moving for some.
I, on the other hand, can confirme nothing has changed. No matter how I leave the app, and the website for that matter, I alway get to recent tab whene I open the app and the website.
I can clearly see recently added or modified picture previews everytime... I'm just glad I have nothing "inciminating so far : ).
Cheers...Awayting patiently...
Dropbox is not listening. This may allow for going to the last tab viewed but it doesn't solve the core issue. The core issue is that we want a simple preference that allows us to turn off the tracking and display of recent files. Making the recent tab one click removed聽doesn't offer any real protection against either the accidental display聽of files or intentional snooping to see what files were accessed recently.
Turning off the recent tab has almost no obstacles in terms of interface design implications or complexity of dev effort. Dropbox is simply choosing not to allow us to turn of the recents tab...which is what most of the users in this forum want. Dropbox is simply prioritizing聽their view of how we SHOULD聽use the product ahead of how we WANT to use the product. Dropbox is essentially saying that they aren't willing to do the work to聽satisfy the聽customers who don't want their files tracked and displayed in the recents tab.
They have the right to execute their view (which I don't prefer) and we聽have the right to choose another solution. I'm busy聽enough that I haven't bothered to switch yet personally, but we chose Google Drive聽for my 75 person company primarily because of this issue. (I'm happy to verify this statement with Dropbox reps if they want to reach out directly)
So, Dropbox won 1 battle and lost another. Eventually I'll switch over personally as well if they don't聽change this but they know most of us will聽just complain for a while rather than take the time to move our files and re-log our聽devices into another service. It's a really competitive market for storage, though, so you'd think they'd take advantage of the easy wins...
"Once we decide which way we'll go, we'll let you know "
I have never heard a bigger "SCREW YOU CUSTOMERS!!!" from ANY company than that right there!!!
I bought a Synology NAS and am in the process of replacing Dropbox with a more functional device that will cost me sooo much less in the long run. All without relying on DB deciding what to do with or how to display my data. I'll get TERABYTES of storage, VPN server, media streaming, camera surveillance, almost any networked function you can imagine... on and on!
I am not at all surprised they are acting this way, no one has sued them yet (or maybe they just settled with an NDA), Reddit hasn't made a stink that I am aware of, and so far (even in this thread... lookin at you Brad S.) they have been able to appease people by rolling out changes to a few customers who apparently think they were listened to the first time they complained. Google does this, Amazon does this, Microsoft does this, Apple does this... Good job DB... you are now in the big leagues, making the big league bucks. (And THAT'S all they care about.)
This thread was opened almost a year ago to the day, if that brings things into perspective. It is TRIVIAL to make an option in the settings to completely disable the "Recent" privacy debacle. (We make apps at my work.)
I am really curious how much revenue I generated this company by referrals, to be treated like this. I was a DB evangelist for the longest... now I'm evangelizing with another message.
Joe R.,
聽 If you are new to Synology, then you are really going to love that box even more than you do now. 聽I have an 1815+ with 22TB of Synology Hybrid RAID with VPN access and automatic backups to both off-site at work and to CrashPlan (cloud). 聽The box is solid.
聽 I wouldn't say that my Synology box could replace Dropbox for the way that I use it. 聽Having synchronization between my Mac OS, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android devices is where Dropbox shines. 聽But then, I use more operating systems than most. 聽:^)
聽 BTW, I just updated Dropbox on my iPad and voila, it no longer defaults to the Recent's tab.
I dont remember how long I have left of my Dropbox subscription, but when it runs out, if this issue isn't fixes (feature toggle of recent) I will no longer use Dropbox. A bit sad, but as other posters have said it seems like they doesn't care.
Yet another +1 for giving users the ability to clear the RECENTS list, and/or prevent it from appearing at all.
Just heard back from support on Twitter: "There isn't a way to remove Recents but thanks for the feedback". Translation: "Suck it, we'll do what we want"
Still no Clear List option in the Recents list of the app huh? Thats pretty lame. Come on DropBox, get on it!
I too, would like to have some options for the recent list
1. No recents list at all
2. Clear specific items from recents list
3. Clear ALL recent from list.聽
I have private items that show up when I'm trying to use dropbox聽for business. 聽I am floored that dropbox isn't listening to their paying customers. 聽It's simply a request for an OPTION; not to change the entire way it works. 聽Bury it deep in advanced settings if you don't want most to mess with it?聽
Also, would be nice to get a change log when updating the iOS app. 聽Can we get people who actually care about the app to be in charge of this? 聽
Hmm. 聽So two observations: this issue has been discussed for more than a year (here and other threads) and Dropbox has not made any useful changes聽to avoid the recents privacy violations; on IOS, the app reopens the last index page that was open - if that was "files" that's the page it reopens. But if you add a document does it go back to recents?
Until Dropbox decides what and how to alter the recents index - and for all you folks wanting "options" that is a really big deal since there are no options at present for anything - I would appreciate it if Dropbox just automatically opened to a blue screen allowing me to select which index page I want from the list along the bottom of the screen. Perhaps later you could list those available index pages on the blue screen (as well as along the bottom of the screen). 聽This should not be difficult to do (it does not change any feature of the app) and maybe can be changed聽rather quickly.
Why? 聽Well because today I opened Dropbox on my phone to show a friend a pdf just added to dropbox (on a Mac) an hour before, and the app opened to index page "recents" and there were photos there that may have offended him. 聽This is very, very bad. 聽Whoever implemented this foolish "improvement" should be sent for re-education, because it displays a stunning lack of thoughtfulness (not to mention forethought and consideration of potential consequences) at a time when everyone is more conscious of their privacy. To put it another way, those pictures of you at the Dore Alley Fair - in Dropbox so you can show your friends - should probably not be seen by your sister's kids, and yet, there they are right next to the kid friendly document you wanted to show them. Sorry. Let me repeat: Very Bad.
Thinking about who may be affected, I can't help but note that attorneys (including me), medical professionals, law enforcement, and anyone subject to privacy considerations (not to mention kids) would have to think twice about Dropbox as a solution. The potential of inadvertently "sharing" a document or a photo or even the existence of a document is just too dangerous.
Now I am not a paying member of the dropbox community - I use the free version - so I have no right to demand anything. 聽But, I beg you to change this situation as soon as you can. Making users click once more to see the recents index seems insignificant compared to the alternative. Note, I like the recents index; I just cannot have the app open to that page when launched.
Otherwise Dropbox works great for me. That pdf was there for me to show my friend, it just was keeping unfortunate company on the recents page; it would have been fine on the files page.
Thanks.
Well, this is interesting. I just found this forum while searching for.a way to turn off the "recents" feature. Apparently this problem goes back almost a full year, and apparently DropBox doesn't give a ****** about fixing it.聽
Ever heard of "customer service"??
Frankly, I'd just like a response. 聽I mean if they're not going to implement it ever, then at least let us know that.
I was a pro Dropbox user for a long time. I've switched to Onedrive now, because of this thread.
Could maybe somene tweet at @dropbox? Maybe a social media question might give them some traction? I tried tweeting, but I am having som issues now. I will retweet if someone does tweet though.
Tarjei, this is all a total waste of time. This topic has been open now for over a year. Absolutely no-one at Dropbox has taken any notice - this for something absolutely trivial to fix. All people here have been asking for an OPTION to DISABLE the display of the RECENT FILE LIST. Not to remove the list, not to remove it by default. Just give us a knob we could set so it does not get displayed. Zero risk to existing customers. Trivial to implement.
Since this is a community forum run by and operated by Dropbox, our collective conclusion is that 聽(1) either no-one at Dropbox bothers reading what we say or (2) someone does read us, but they just don't care.
I suspect you can tweet as much as you can but will not get any answer at all.
@Simon C: 聽How do you like onedrive compared to dropbox? 聽Same features? 聽More or less features? 聽I guess I mostly like the ease of use/instant links. 聽Does onedrive have that? 聽Cuz I'm considering switching myself. 聽This is completely unprofessional of Dropbox.聽
It is almost as easy to create external links in OneDrive, but you do to go to the website.
However, everyone is mad at OneDrive for reducing their free space from 15 GB to 5 GB.
Meanwhile, in Android, when I open Dropbox, it does not open Recent, so happy about that.
Like everybody else I got to this thread when the RECENTS iOS version annoyed me.
For starters it doesn't really need to be there. I'll go to the file I need, recent or not.
The fact that there is no SETTINGS option is just a bad dropbox decision.
Didn't realize so many people are as upset as I am and kept checking with every iOS update if it was changed.
One year and no action means : GOTTA GO and check out what is better.
DP was my go to app and I sang the praises to everybody.
My $ 99 a year will go to somebody else when the next renewal is up..
@Kurt L.
Please let us know what you find. 聽I'll be interested to give my money to someone else as well!聽
Just want to add another voice to this thread. Frankly, as a software developer myself I am utterly amazed that a simple option to "clear recents list" hasn't been added by now - this must be 1 days development maximum, and the lack of such an option is, as others have said, a terrible oversight.
I bought an engagement ring a few weeks ago and took a photo of it, which then uploaded to Dropbox. My fiance had no idea, but when I right-clicked on the聽dropbox tray item while she was stood next to me, there it was for her to see. So that blew the surprise.
I know it's a trivial example, but there will be thousands of other such scenarios with potentially more serious consequences.
