Lori, I had the same issue.
Dropbox is hiring propagandists to censor and down play criticism.
E.g. Rich R. moved and censored my posts and I still disagree him interfering and down playing posts.
I reported his abuse of super user rights to dropbox. Perhaps if more people do they realise they have to revoke and start reading what customers write themselves.
Took Ages to find but this works, due to a folder change I had about 700 recents !!

Hi all,
I get this response from DropBox support. I have actually tried this and it works. I have DB in a folder on my Android so I had to create the shortcut on a page first then move it. Hopefully they listen and remove the Recents.

Hi there,
Thanks for writing in. I understand that you would like to change the default tab/folder when the app opens. When tapping the Dropbox icon, Dropbox will open up to the Recents page first. This is working as intended and cannot be modified by the user.
We are always looking for user input when creating the next version of the Dropbox app and I will make sure your comments are passed along to our development team.
As a workaround, the Dropbox app offers the ability to create a home screen widget to any folder in your account, including the top-level Dropbox folder.
To create this shortcut: - Tap and hold an empty spot on the home screen (phones) or tap the All Apps icon on the home screen (tablets) - Tap “Widgets” - Tap and hold the “Dropbox Folder” widget, drag it to the desired location on your home screen, and release. - Upon releasing, you’ll be prompted to “Create shortcut to” the currently selected folder. If you wish to open a different folder, navigate to the preferred folder. - Tap the “Create Shortcut” button.
You can now use this new Dropbox folder icon on your home screen to bypass the Recents view upon opening the Dropbox app.
If there is anything else I can do to be of service, please reach back out to me and I will be more than happy to assist.
Regards, Ralph
Ian, thanks for sharing.
IT is a work around for core functionality and I found out it is lagging when opening.
Also it does not resolve the bizar steps you need to circumvent the dropbox viewers nobody needs, wants or asked for. I want to open pdfs in either adobe or UB reader.
Lastly it does not resolve dropbox absolutely not showing any interest in their user community here...
Do we know if Dropbox are working on a way to disable Recents or allow more control of Recents?
Can someone please tell me how this has not gone viral?? Dropbox's complete lack interest or concern toward users' privacy?? We've given them a ridiculously ample amount of time to address the issue, or even explain what is going on. It's time we got the rest of the Internet involved.
From https://www.dropbox.com/about :
"We create products that are easy to use and are built on trust. WHEN PEOPLE PUT THEIR FILES IN DROPBOX, THEY CAN TRUST THEY’RE SECURE AND THEIR DATA IS THEIR OWN. OUR USERS’ PRIVACY HAS ALWAYS BEEN OUR FIRST PRIORITY, AND IT ALWAYS WILL BE."
...Unless someone is standing next to you, then they get to see everything you have recently done. Including file names, other Clients' data, pictures of your naked 3 month old in the bath tub...
Either Dropbox or I don't understand what "Privacy," "Always," and "First" mean.
Creating a shortcut works. Just delete the dropbox icon. My guess is the company is in profit taking mode / waiting for Microsoft or Google to buy them.
Defaulting to recent view makes no sense. That is not how peoples' brains work. If I am accessing Dropbox, I am looking for a particular file. There is a high probability that the file or folder is not recent. This forces users to take an extra step. Killing workflow. Recent files is for when I don't remember where that thing is, but I know I used it the other day. I understand you are trying to help people be organized by presenting them information you think they need. But people don't think that complex. When I use Dropbox, I usually know where the file is. I totally disregard "Recent." I have never checked Recent once. Why hunt through an unalphabetized list when the item might not even be in there? Recent should be an option, not a hurdle, which it is. I am blown away that this feature got implemented the way it did. If this is still an issue the next time my subscription is up, I am not renewing. Keep it simple!
Support, please advise ETA to problem resolution or alternatively advise how I can refund my remaining subscription so I can port to BOX.
If you are unhappy with this please vote 1 star in app store and post here to confirm.
Justin,
Dropbox does not provide ETA's on resolutions or new features. Also, per the terms, Dropbox does not issue refunds. You can downgrade your account so that it doesn't auto-renew at the end of your subscription, but you will not be refunded the balance. You'll continue to have your Pro account benefits until your subscription runs out.
So you're the censorship monkey now, too, Rich?
There was no profanity in that statement whatsoever, just pointing out Justin's actual situation - and it isn't as if you can delete the emails that everyone got when I posted it.
You're correct, there was no profanity in that statement, but it implied an act that doesn't need to be discussed on these forums, just as the last (now deleted) line in your most recent reply did as well.
I'll ask you to keep the discussions on topic. If you continue making such comments your posting privileges could be revoked. Thank you.
You're right, there was a direct implication in both statements, but it is an accurate one.
I don't like the recents feature because it shows private pictures I've view recently. If I have camera upload on and take some risque pictures for or with my SO I don't want those flashing up on the screen. You guys should offer an option to turn it off, or at least exclude some folders from ever showing up there... right now I have to keep a passcode on my app so it doesn't flash up pics I don't want to share at work or when my kids are around.
Seriously, think about this before you make a feature mandatory.
Can we change the name from Dropbox to Sovjetbox? I think that would resolve the confusion caused by the idea that this company would even try to listen to it's customers...
This is really a poorly designed feature and my problem is compounded by the fact that I am an attorney (I've heard all the jokes, thank you). I work on confidential, personal and sometimes very graphic things (police crime scene photos, autopsy photos, reports, etc...) I also use dropbox to save personal photos of my family. MORE THAN ONCE my wife has complained about logging in to see a family photo or vid, only to have her (and on some occasions, the kids) see a thumbnail of a dead body (or worse). This should be an absolute no-brainer for privacy and common sense reasons.
PS - this needs to be changed for mobile and desktop versions.
That's fine rich, I'll vote with my feet and move to a company that actually listens (and or acknowledges) issues for their customers.
Rich, when you need to quote the 'terms' regarding refunds you have lost the argument and I suspect a few more clients.
Well congratulations, my nexus tablet now defaults to files (after a dropbox update) as does my ipad Provided you close app when in files, the next time you open, yippee it opens in FILES !!.
Thankyou
Upload a bunch of private photos into a secure folder... Two minutes later, my kid clicks on my drop box folder to get his homework.. guess what recent pops up... Goodbye drop box.
Agree with others, clear recent is needed. Imagine not being able to clear your browser history? As an end user it is annoying to see customers being ignored. As a developer, I can't understand what could be so difficult about it.
Not renewing and not looking back either, my prime offers unlimited photo storage anyway.
Guys I found a temporary fix.
I just placed a folder named "z" on my dropbox folder, inside it theres a folder named z1 with about 15 empty text files... then I made about 50 copy folders named z1, z1 (copy), z1 (copy2), etc. (To do this, just press CTRL + C, then CTRL + V lots of times.)
So there are about 500 total empty text files inside the multiple folders.
When you do this recent files bug, and none will be shown.
Lol!!! FYI if you delete it from recents, you also delete your file from dropbox.
Careful.
Very annoyed with this feature. It's the first tab one sees when opened. If my device is compromised they'll know immediately what I was working. Clearing and deactivating would be ideal. Thank you.
1. I don't like the fact that the defult page is "recent files", which wouldn't be so bad if it maybe showed folders instead of thumbnails of actual files.
2. The "recent files" list seems really long, it shows files I looked at, new folders, any activity basically is on the list, files I feel like I dealt with weeks ago still show, when you scroll down it's seems limitless.
3. Is this a feature that is not being fixed because most user's are not paid customers?
4. I notice on the forum anybody remotely connected to DB only replies to tell people to direct them related post. Or they simply say "no" the issue can't be fixed, but never to give answers to help.
5. It's a big glitch, let's be honest people use these things to hide pictures too, so to have those same pictures be the exact thing to pop up first is ridiculous.
6. Everyone notices that Dropbox is not really addressing these concerns, and are seemingly not worried about fixing the concerns.
I ask does the lack of concern from Dropbox come from users not being subscribers? Or like another poster asked, is it because the app is automatically downloaded on some devices, giving you more users.?
8. This issue is for both the cell phone app and the computer.

This is an important feature to add; if you can clear your browser history, you should be able to clear your Recents history on Dropbox.
Why is it a difficult feature to add? Say you're reading user actions to generate the history and there's no way to delete those actions from the database without causing other problems - is that the problem? I'm a developer, I understand this.
So why not just update a timestamp in the database to the current time and don't show history earlier than the current timestamp. There you go. Problem solved. This has been going on for way too long and it's bothered me for months and months - please implement an update for the sake of your paying customers.
It is pity that big players in the market do not listen to the public, maybe it is Microsoft, Evernote or Dropbox. People are suffering for almost 1 years and it takes hell the Dropbox to solve problem.Actually on the first instance it should not have been there as a problem there had to be an option to not to have recent file permanently. Secondly when the people are crying why and how it is taking years Dropbox to remove this problem?. Especially in this hi Technology age. It shows that they have taken their customers at ransom. Very very bad. We are the poor lot. Even if they solve it now it has made poor history as a customer care.
