Instead of deleting my files, Dropbox is trying to move them to an external hidden folder.

Hello,

For several weeks, the delete option work in a different way than before when delete button give a deleted files result. Now, the system ask to me for moving the files outside dropbok in a strange folder as you can see on the pics… it seems to be a hidden subfolder in the public folders !

Please can you tell me how to go back to a real delete not a strange moving files ?

Based on your screenshot, I understand that you’re using the desktop app to delete a file from a folder that’s been shared with other Dropbox users. Does this sound correct?

If yes, are you receiving the same message for a file that’s personal (not shared with anyone else)? What are the exact steps you follow to delete those files?

Finally, can you let me know the overall syncing status and app version of your Dropbox app?

I made a test with a non-shared files that i saved on the dropbox root and I had the same result.

I click on the delete button and I get the message without any other option.

Sync status "les fichiers sont à jour" (Files are updated).

App version : 260.4.2926

Any idea how to come back to truly delete ?

Hi there, @Netbag, thanks for the update here.

Have you searched for that folder on your computer? Can you actually locate it?

Also, if you do choose the option to "move the file out of Dropbox", does it get deleted?

Please test that out and let us know what you find.

The search lead to user/Public/image but the files doesn't appear with explorer…

Yes the files is deleted from dropbox.

How can I go back to normal deleting as before ?

Hi again, Bruno! Have you also enabled the setting to view hidden items in File Explorer, and the folder is still not visible after that?

Yes I put the right setup for explorer but nothing appear.

Can you send me a screenshot of what you see here? I’d like to double check whether Dropbox backup is currently enabled and how this may have played any role in what you’re seeing now.

Also, if you delete a non-shared file via www.dropbox.com, do you get the same prompt that the file will be moved instead (on the desktop app)?

Hi @Netbag, this is a specific message related to Microsoft Windows security IDs, and isn't directly related to Dropbox.

S-1-5-21 is a Security Identifier (SID) used to uniquely identify local users, domain users, or groups on a system and typically appears as S-1-5-21-[Computer/Domain-ID]-[RID].

Have you recently changed or deleted a user profile on your Windows machine? Did you migrate your Dropbox folder from an external drive to an internal drive, or move the drive from another machine?

Could you try these steps to first unlock the folder, and then see if you can delete files from it?

Did you change the ownership of the folder to your user account?

I can only see an Administrator account in the screenshot, which isn't going to be the same as a user's profile.
