My old external 2TB hard drive crashed. I need to download all the files (about 1.6TB worth) I have online (in the Cloud) down to my new external hard drive. I'm not seeing an easy way to do that. I would appreciate any help. Thanks much!! Scott
Hey @Scott_Horton1966, thanks for your post!
Sorry for the lengthy reply, I just want to make sure we cover everything.
To get to the point, you do have a lot of content in your Dropbox account, as you said, so it would be quite time consuming to download everything through the website.
Instead, I'd suggest that you install the Dropbox desktop app to your computer. If you choose this way, you have a couple of options on how to go about the process:
The catch here is that the files will need to take up space on your internal drive in order to sync and for you to be able to open them as normal when you copy them over to the external drive.
I know this is a lot of info and a bit complicated, so feel free to ask me anything before you try any of the above.
Thanks!
Hi Hannah- Thanks so much for your quick reply. I did everything you said (I think). I created a folder on my 4 TB drive to house everything I have stored on the cloud (about 1.5 TB worth), I should have plenty of room.
The folders are showing up on my external drive okay, but the actual files have a little blue cloud symbol, and when I try to access them, they have to physically download from the internet. In the settings under "Sync and storage", I have tried to "make available online". When I try that, it waits in a holding pattern showing "Choose Files to access without internet". It literally did that all day yesterday before abruptly shutting down with some error and rebooting my computer. I am now trying that again, maybe it will work this time.
Am I on the right track here? Ultimately I would like all 1.5 TB of my files to be immediately accessible in the Dropbox cloud AND on my external drive. Thanks again for your help!!!!
Happy to help, Scott!
Can you let me know which way you chose to go about this? If you can describe the steps you followed, I'd really appreciate it.
Let me know how syncing and making your files available offline goes!
