I am having trouble updating my email. When I type in my preferred email it says that the email is already in use. Where would I find that information?
Go to www.dropbox.com/forgot (probably in an incognito window) and use the email to get a password reset on it.
You can then use that to log on and either delete the account or change the email on it to a different one to free it up.

As @Mark suggested, try resetting the Dropbox password in order to log in to the other Dropbox account under that email address.
You can then change the email, or delete the account (ensuring there are no important files on it first), to free up the email.
