Hi @SA25, thanks for messaging the Community.
Is it possible that you enabled the Dropbox Backup feature on your Dropbox account? This allows you to backup certain folders on your computer to the Dropbox site, including the Documents folder.
Did you move the Documents folder, or make any other changes to your account?
This will help me to assist further.
My files have been automatically loading into Dropbox since I opened the account. Is that an indication that I enabled Dropbox? I didn't move the Documents folder on my laptop or in my Dropbox account.
If you have the files in the Dropbox folder, then the files would be syncing normally to the Dropbox site.
The Dropbox Backup feature is a different system which backs up certain folders instead of directly syncing them to and from the site.
Could you attach a screenshot showing the error message you received?
I have a folder in my Finder titled "My files in Dropbox" which does directly link my files to the Dropbox site. I've attached a screenshot. I've also attached a screenshot of the error message.
This seems like a shortcut to your Dropbox folder @SA25. Are you able to find the same folder in the other 'Documents' folder shown in your screenshot?
