Backing up 2 phones and linking them. Do I need a Family plan?

Currently I have the Dropbox Plus Plan and have my iPhone automatically uploading all my photos. I want to start backing up my wife’s phone as well. Do I just download the app on her phone and link it to the account? Or do I need to get the Family Plan to have both of our phone upload automatically?

You could indeed try to simply download the Dropbox app on your wife's mobile, sign in with your account and then enable the camera uploads feature there as well. However, with this method, photos from both phones will be uploaded to the same folder which might be something that you do not want.

 

The other option you mentioned, purchasing the Family plan, is also a good one as each of you will be able to upload your photos on either account and on a separate folder.
