Hi there,I'm looking to copy my entire Dropbox library from one account I own into another. I need to have a backup of these files under another account. Is there an easy way to do this?
Hey there @VineyardBlue2012, thanks for using Dropbox and happy Monday!
Have you considered putting the content of the first account in a folder and then sharing the folder with the second account directly?
Let me know if this helps!
That might work, and then just move the items in the shared folder directly into the other account?
Hi @VineyardBlue2012, sorry to jump in here!
Once you have the content in the shared folder using account A, then you'd share everything with account B, so everything would be visible and accessible there.
If you have any questions, let us know!
This would work, but I am trying to extract all the files from an account that has moved to basic. I can't create sharing and I can't create folders within the web interface.
I have two dropbox accounts. One has 550GB on it, but I let it lapse to basic. The other is a Pro with 3TB. I don't want the former account, but I do want the data on it. I can't export the data as .zip files because it says "too many zip files to zip", and I can't share the folders, presumably because this is some restriction set by dropbox against people with basic accounts that are too big.
How can I get my data back (short of paying dropbox)? All I want to do is help dropbox by deleting an obsolete account.
There is another way to do it @jeminar1, but it might take some time since you have a large content.
You can either individually download your folders from the Basic account, and then add them to the Professional one.
Or you can basically swap the emails between accounts. You can try changing the emails by using a third email you own as a placeholder to temporarily free up your personal email, to then switch over the accounts.
I hope this helps!
Thanks @Megan.
How would the email thing work? The dropbox account I want to keep is not empty (It has about 1.5TB of good stuff on it), so really I want to merge them into one.
Hi @Jeminar, @jeminar1, are either of these accounts syncing to your computer via the Dropbox desktop application?
@Jay. One is.... but most is kept online as I don't have that much space on my HDD. I imagine that's why most people use dropbox 🙂
Thanks for that. The best option then would be to create a shared folder with no files in it, and then I can tell you the simplest method to get the files onto your large account.
Firstly, what error are you getting when creating a shared folder? Are you able to convert an existing folder into a shared folder instead?
@Jay. Thanks for helping on this. The error I get is when I click share for a folder, the message says "This folder can only be shared with a link".
Hi @jeminar1, from what I understand you are trying to share a folder that contains other shared folders.
Can you browse the content of the folder you are trying to share and see if there's any subfolder left there with the little two people icon on them?
@Megan. That's it... you cannot follow the instructions at https://help.dropbox.com/organize/move-files-between-accounts because you cannot share a folder that is shared or contains shared folders.May I suggest you write an engineering ticket that does two changes:1. At the text that comes up that says "This folder can only be shared with a link" (or something similar), you add a help hyperlink that points out why.
2. At the help link above you add in the words on the first step 2. "You can only share a folder that is not already shared. Remove sharing by (...)"
Thank you for fast response @Megan, @Jay. I never considered that the "Community" would be actually supported by people giving answers. You've increased my faith in dropbox as a solution.
Hi @Jeminar, I can definitely forward your feedback to the appropriate areas so we can continue to improve.
Your comments on this have been quite helpful, and I will do everything I can to ensure that your voice is heard.
I'm glad I could help with this, and we'll always be one post away. Have a lovely weekend ahead, enjoy! 😊
