I cannot install the desktop app on Linux Fedora 37

Gnome 43 has removed

libnautilus-extension.so.1

making it impossible to install Dropbox on Fedora 37. Please update the rpm installer to make use of the changes in gnome 43.

Hi there,

We've spoken to our team, and they've told us that they're aware of a caching issue that causes that endpoint to return invalid 404 errors. They're currently working on a fix for this, but in the meantime, retrying the link should work.

We also recommend clearing your cache before retrying, as this can assist with some common errors.

Dropbox is arguably one of the best solutions for remote file storage.

I know there are some challenges with Linux from the standpoint of trying to provide support to the innumerable number of distributions out there, I get it...

But;

Maybe Dropbox could work more closely with the folks at Ubuntu & Fedora to maintain support those distributions at least, they happen to be the two distributions Dropbox provides download links, but the app doesn't work.

Fedora & Ubuntu use gnome, gnome uses Nautilus; Dropbox provided support for Nautilus, but now that is no longer the case so the installation fails by not being able to resolve dependencies. As of now, there is no solution or workaround, and I will not buy a Mac or install Windows just to get Dropbox to work, I will sadly migrate to an alternate supported solution..

This day and age I think this could be better managed. The Linux users our there are growing in number, I myself abandoned Microsoft years ago and never cared for Apple inc., and I know I'm not alone.

Hope this fosters some thought on the development side at Dropbox, and Thanks for listening....

nautilus-dropbox-2020.03.04-1.fedora.x86_64.rpm is not working on Fedora 37 because libnautilus-extension.so.1 is not available. Now Fedora propose libnautilus-extension.so.4

You can reach out to me if you need to - but there isn't really any troubleshooting to be done on the customer end. This is a problem with Dropbox using a code library that was removed from Gnome 43 which is the default desktop environment for Fedora 37. I'm sure someone on your engineering team will know about this please escalate it there.

Same situation here. I'm holding my upgrade to Fedora 37 for now hoping this issue with the Nautilus plugin is resolved more or less quickly. The existing GitHub pull request makes me think the solution is near, but please get in touch with me if you want me to test any technical solution. Thanks!

I logged out and tried Software app again and this time it showed a Dropbox app as a flatpack. It seems to work well. FYI

I'm attempting to upgrade Fedora, but unfortunately it looks like a library Dropbox relies on was removed in GNOME 43 - am hoping to just be kept in the loop on updates, as I'm sure your engineering team is aware of it already! If someone from your developers in spite available push request want to take a look more close, a good start point is running up to date nautilus and try the Dropbox plugins there. 🙂 Is it working?! Rhetoric, of course. If someone of your developers still don't know what this means... 🤦

Just installed Fedora 37 as well and got this issue.

Would like to get feedback on any estimated ETA. Should be easy enough to fix given the provided fix in the github repo.

As a fellow developer, it's my understanding the GitHub PR is not a final solution. Likely Dropbox wants to be able to build those sources both for old and new versions of Gnome/Nautilus (depending on the distribution you're running), so there would be some #idfefs involved and changes to the configuration script. Still, it's a very good first step and you can't ask much more from the community. My 2 cents.

Same issue here. Obviously not user specific but os specific. Tried Fedora 36 and it works fine.

Would be amazing to have a fix in the nearby future... Kinda broke my workflows...

I'm the author of the PR. Dropbox distributes a compiled packages, so an #if wouldn't help.

nautilus-dropbox hasn't had any activity from Dropbox devs in years, I'm not sure if Dropbox is still interested in maintaining this. In the meantime, so distros have already included the patch.

It's great to see the engagement from Dropbox on the forums, but the problem is well-described, there's nothing to be gained from reaching out individually.

We just need an engineer to be tasked with merging or adapting https://github.com/dropbox/nautilus-dropbox/pull/105.

I understand why Dropbox effectively dropped support for GNOME 43: Fedora users are a small portion of Dropbox's customer base.

However, I need clarification on why Dropbox will not offer a pro-rated refund. I spent the past hour chatting with Apple and Dropbox customer support agents, each pointing his finger at the other. I bought an annual Dropbox subscription on my iPhone. I am past the 90-day window when Apple grants a refund, and Dropbox refuses a refund because I paid via my iPhone. The Dropbox customer support agent was as helpful as he could be but lacked the tools to grant a refund. If the number of GNOME 43 users is too small to support, then offering pro-rated refunds on annual subscriptions should be easy.

I really hope Dropbox will nto drop support for Gnome 43 - that would be dropping support for most of their linux users, I'd assume. Or doesn't Ubuntu use Gnome anymore?
