For about 1 week ago I can no longer edit shared Excel files.
I dont have the option in the top to edit via Excel online, that whole button has just dissapeared.
Does somebody know why this has happend?
From your second screenshot, the default app to open the files is the Dropbox site. Could you change it to make this Excel on the web?
Thanks for posting on our forum today, @AxelG.
Does the same thing happen if you try to access your Excel files via another browser? Also, does this occur for personal Excel files, or only shared ones?
You can also feel free to send me a screenshot of the options you see, and I’ll take a look. Just make sure there’s none of your personal info showing there.
Cheers!

So i tried using another broweser but that did not help. As you can see entire button where you can choose to work in the file in excel online is gone.
I have similar files on Dropbox that cant be accessed via excel aswell.
But I have seen that if someone is already working in the file, the pop up shows up saying that I can see the updated file via Excel online. And asking me if I want to open it via Excel online. Then it works, but as I said, only if someone is actively working in it.
Hey @AxelG, sorry to jump in here.
If you click on the dropdown menu (arrow) next to the 'download' option, what other options do you see?
And if you click on the '...' (ellipsis) button on the right side of the file name, before actually opening it to preview it, do you see the 'open in' option there?
This is what it looks like.
Believe me, I have checked every corner of this page to try to find some way to open it via Excel online.
Do you have any other solutions? For me it seems that there might have been some update done by you guys that broke the interaction between excel and dropbox.
Hi @AxelG, could you try disconnecting the Excel app, or Microsoft Office from this page, and then try opening Excel on the web again to reconnect it?
Is the default on this page to open via Excel on the web, or via Google Sheets?
Hey Jay,
Hope you had a great easter.
I did what you said and it didnt help. I disconnected the office application, restarted the browser, connected the application by creating a new excel file. It still didnt help.
Also the Default app to open .xlsx, .xls files is Excel.
Im attaching two photos to show how it looks like.

That actually worked. Now the files open automatically in Excel for Web.
Altough the other bug still exists that I can see the "Open in Excel for Web" when I look at the file in Dropbox, this atleast works as a workaround.
Thanks alot.
Hi @Luisa6, let's jump right into this!
Can you let us know more about this? Which platform do you use, in order to open your Microsoft files, and do you get any specific errors when trying to edit them?
Keep me posted, and we'll take it from there!
I use Android. In the dropbox application / files / *.*xls fileThen I visualize the file and when I press the edit key (a square with a diagonal line) to write, the dropbox goes back and the files in the archive appear again. Before, when I pressed the edit key, I was able to work on the file.
Hi @Luisa6, what is the Dropbox mobile version that you're using on your end?
Other than that, did you happen to clear the Dropbox app’s cache, and reinstalling perhaps? Also let me know what results you get if you try to open the file directly using the relative Microsoft Excel app instead.
I cleared the cache, uninstalled the dropbox APP, installed it again, after restarting the phone and the error persists.I downloaded the excel file to my phone and it works normally.
Hi @Luisa6, just to confirm, is this an xls or xlsx file?
Only the latter can be edited on an Android device.
