On Mac air with newest OS. I uninstalled the app, checked the hard drive, restarted the computer, barked at the moon, clapped twice and prayed to allah. The problem remains.
I refuse to pay to upgrade. I cannot sync additional files.
Hi Paul!
When you join a shared folder, that folder now resides in your Dropbox too and therefore takes up space.
Your Dropbox quota is calculated based on the total contents of your Dropbox, which includes shared folders. A Dropbox account can't sync more than its quota, so a 2 GB account can't sync more than 2 GB, including the space taken up by shared folders. Because every member of a shared folder can add and modify the files in the shared folder, the shared folder takes up space in each member's account. This policy exists to prevent people from giving themselves unlimited space by stacking Basic accounts and shared folders.
If you need a little more space, you can visit the following pages on our website to see how you can earn bonus space:
- Earn bonus space by learning about Dropbox: https://www.dropbox.com/gs - Earn bonus space by referring people to Dropbox: https://www.dropbox.com/referrals - Earn bonus space by telling people about Dropbox: https://www.dropbox.com/free
Thanks,
Dom
I attempted to open a shared folder for the first time, but I received a message saying it was full. The folder contained nowhere near the 2 GBs of data. It seems the only option is to upgrade, but that doesn't make sense. Please advise.
It only needs to contain more that your account has free, how much do u have free compared to the shared folder?
I'm sorry, but I do not understand the question. My understanding is that you get 2 MGs free initially. The folder sent to me has far less than that. I don't know why it would say "full" if this was my first time using Dropbox. Any ideas?
If it's saying full then the shared folder likely has more than the 2GB available in your new Dropbox account. Open your Account page and see what it shows you for usage in your account. You should see a line that looks like this:
31.2 GB of 36 GB used Regular files (30.8 GB) Shared files (386.8 MB) Unused space (4.8 GB)
Please tell us what it shows for each section.
It shows that my regular files are 2 of 2 GBs but shared are 0. So what constitutes regular and why is it full if I've never used Dropbox before? Also, the administrator informed me that other new users were able to view the shared folders.
Are you kidding me? Your regular (unshared files) are currently using 2 of 2 GB and now you want to add a shared folder with more files in it!.What part of already used 2 of 2 didnt tweak you to that you dont have any left to use?
I keep getting a 'Your Dropbox is full." notification, even after I deleted most of my files. Why is this happening? Does this mean I have to begin paying for more space even though I am not using all the space?
Erica,
Make sure the message is about your Dropbox space and not the hard drive space on your computer being low. There have been a lot of those lately.
I am getting the same error message (it's a business account) but it says I've used 500Gb out of 2Gb. And when I check my files, I only have 700Mb.
It is definitely not the hard drive space on my computer - free space on the C drive is 231Gb.
Any suggestions? How can I contact DB support directly?
I'm having this problem with my Dropbox as well.
This is a company computer and I need access to my company dropbox. I was given access to all of the folders on the account but for some reason only a portion of them show up on my desktop. I have to log in to see them which makes dropbox absolutely worthless (coupled with their non-responsiveness I can't imagine we'll be using them very much longer).
On top of not having access on the desktop to all of the files and folders I received a notification that my Dropbox is full even though we've recently just purchased an upgrade. I have 2Gb of a Tb used and I still have gigs of storage on my harddrive.
They need a help desk. You asked this question in May and there hasn't been a response from them.
I just received a "Dropbox is full" message, when I'm currently using about 161GB of my terabyte of storage. I think it's related to one shared folder, because that folder hasn't updated since another user added around 100 photos to it yesterday. Those pix would chew up some storage, but not 800 GB. Outside of that folder, all seems to be well with Dropbox sync.
Dropbox says that I am using 3.1GB of 2.5GB. I have no files in any of my folders. A friend has shared files with me - but all in his folder, all with his ownership. None are on my desktop.
I am getting the message:
Me too. On Windows 10. No barking, but much gnashing of teeth. 243 KB of 2 GB used, yet I can't join a new shared folder for lack of space for three days now - and they assure me that it isn't huge.
Please let me know if you find a solution.
Geoffrey - shared folders count in full against your account quota - if its larger than your available space then you cannot accept the invite.
Solomon - you need to delete files from your Dropbox or upgrade.
Richard. I deleted tons of files and am well under my allowed space. Its still a problem.
What files are showing at www.dropbox.com/home and www.dropbox.com/account THEY are the ones to look at.
If you want to accept a shared folder, it doesn't matter if you are under your limit. If accepting a share would put you over it then you cant.
I'm having the same or a similar problem. When I try to accept an invitation, I receive a pop-up that state:
"Your personal Dropbox will run out of space if you accept this invitation." My account shows I'm only using 7mb of 2.75 available, and I'm assured by the originator of the folder that it is less than 250 mb. What else could I try?
The originator of the share is likely mistaken. If you have nearly 2.7GB of available space in your account and Dropbox is saying that you'll run out of space, then the shared folder you've been invited to is larger than 2.7GB.
OK, so it turns out that the new photographer has like a 12 Megapixel camera and the person delivering the files had no idea that they were huge.
Obviously, Dropbox is watching the file sizes closely. It would be nice if they would give us an indicator of the size of shared folders so that we have some idea how to proceed. The current user interface tries to be "simple", but ends up being frustrating when it appears that Dropbox is broken.
I might consider upgrading for some projects if I had that information. But I'm a volunteer; I'm not going to throw money just in case that might fix the problem.
My Dropbox is empty. I put every file in the trash. Now I cannot download a new file which is not big. I get an error message saying it is full. Maybe I should turn my computer off and reboot and then this box will "know" it's empty? Paper sure was easier.
A restart is a good idea Pam - as is logging in and out on website.
Also, if you've only just done the trashing thing you need to give it time to reindex and sync (i.e. back to a green tick)
Says I can't sign in cause email is already in use. Yeah. that's me. My picture. Then, next thing I know, I'm signed in. What's up with that?
I turned off and rebooted and tried to download again. Nope full. What the heck is a green tick. Last I heard you got Lyme's from that.
I really needed to get some work done this afternoon. How long will it take to reindex, etc.?
OK so I have used 891mb of my 2.2gb allowance. This is what it says in my account settings tab, the drop down bit of my profile tab and all the files, including in shared folders on the drop box home page match what is in my dropbox on my desktop. However, as you can see from the screen grabs, the desktop folder size does not tally with the size on the website. However, it is still only 935.7MB.
My drop box was (and still is) saying I am full. The transcripts folder in the screen grab is no longer in existence, as I have left that team/group thing but it is still saying I am full. I have quit the app, signed out of drop box and signed back in again.
Is there anything that can be done? I'm waiting on some more files to work on in the next day or two and it is really holding me up.
The ONLY solution is to use iCloud drive or Google drive. Dropbox still hasn't provided a solution or anyone else respectfully.
the desktop folder size does not tally with the size on the website.
And it won't. The Dropbox folder has a hidden cache folder in it. This folder does not count against your storage quota and only exists on your computers (it's not in your account online). Because of this the local Dropbox folder size will usually vary compared to the size reported online.
The transcripts folder in the screen grab is no longer in existence
That's not a folder name in the message; it's the team name. Have you actually left the team?
Solomon,
Can google drive be used to share audio files? We use it to work on documents collaboratively because it works in real time, but kind of assumed that because the project leader was getting up to upload audio onto dropbox it was because google didn't have that functionality.
I'll ask my colleague if he can try sending via G-Drive.
I'm very annoyed about having wasted so much time on this if it is a known issue and there is no fix.
Hi Rich,
Yes, I left the Transcripts team. Sorry for not being clearer in my original post
Yes Liz can be used for anything and it works great
